HISTORIC LIARS Boy of 17 Wrote Play and Had it Produced in Famous London Theater as Shakespeare's. BY J. P. GLASS, ’ |l'@- AMONG THOSE MOST AVID IN THEIR ENTHUSIASM WAS SAMUEL IRELAND. A London attorney had an inordinate love for antiquities of all sorts. His 17-year-old son sought to gratify the father's eager hunger for this sort of thing. ‘The result was the William Ireland Shakespearean forgeries, one of the greatest literary falsifications in history. The boyish William Ireland had but a moderate acquaintance with literature of any kind and knew little of the Elizabethan period, but he duped even scholars who had made the literature of the Shakespearean day their special study. London, one hundred and twenty-five years ago, was in a perfect period of Shakespearean research. Bookstalls and attics were overhauled for docu- ments relating to the Bard of Avon. Among those most avid in their en- thusiasm was Mr. Samuel Ireland, who constantly praised the poet before his son, read his works aloud of an eve- ning, and was a well known collector of antique books and prints. William early gained knowledge of old paper, water marks, seals, bindings, etc., in antique documents. Hence, when he camP to learn about Thomas Chatter- “the marvelous boy” who 25 years bemre, had deceived the world with his famous Rowley manuscripts, subse- quently killing himself when his im- posture became known, he had the equipment with which to imitate him in forgery. Presumably he had an inherent in- elination for forgery. This and his de- sire to delight his father with what ap- peared to be marvelous discoveries seem to be his only reasons for his subsequent impositions, for he sought no profits. His first forgery was a lease bearing Shakespeare's name. Before he finished he had produced what purported to be the manuscripts of “King Lear” and of “Hamlet” and finally a tragedy no one had heard of before—"Vortigern.” This play was actually produced at the Drury Lane Theater as Shake- speare’s and with the famous actor, .Nhn Philip Kemble, in the principal part. While it failed because of its short- comings, it nevertheless showed that 17-year-old William Ireland had real ability, which further was indicated in certain lines he injected into “King Lear” and which lr.holm accepted as coming from Shakespea And he had wfl!wn "vomlern" in two months! ‘The mass of documents produced by the boy finally became so great that every one asked where they.came from. His only answer was that they were given him by a certain gentleman for whom he had performed a special serv- ice. - Persistent inquiry resulted in a confession. Samuel Ireland promptly washed his hands of his offspring, who, but for his unfortunate venture, conceived in_the immaturity of youth, might have achieved a great name by his own merit. HOLLYWOOD, Calif., September 27 (N.ANA, A new star system changes the lives of cinema successes and frees them somewhat from the limitations of the old ways. Under its impetus Corinne Grifith plans to live in France during that part of the year when she will be a lady of leisure.” A good three months will be possible away from the village under a regime which provides for a given num- ber of pictures each season. The ambitious and far-sighted one ‘(willing to work continuously while here and to search with untiring zeal for itable vehicles) can get away and lead life uncontaminated by the virus of professionalism. French Tutors on Hand. French tutors are already installed at the Griffith beach house, where Corinne is preparing for her second talkie of the Fall season. The dignified Texas beauty will give us everything from tap dancing to lovely whoopee in her com- ing picture, it seems. And singing, of course. ‘The same system gives Vilma Banky two pictures a year. This is consider- ably less than Colleen Moore, Maxy Pickford and others have. But the beautiful Vilma's English is not yet suitable to many roles. Perhaps when her speech is as negotiable as that of gome other stars she will have less leisure than now. She is building an elaborate home in the pine woods at Lake Arrowhead, and | expects to burn the first Yule log there this Christmas, hemmed in by snow. Mary Pickford long since has con- fided to intimates her longing to spend part of the year in the English country- side. Her contract calls for several pictures each year, so she will have to work fast to get three months away | from the village. “Silencers” Go Talkie. Two fine old favorites of the silen regime will play leads in & 100 per cen! talkie now being made in Hollywood. | Blanche Sweet and Tom Moore are the leading lights in a story of night-club pinto relief the restrained emotions she established that actor’s success. And she made the first cellulotd version »f “Anna Christie.” Speaking of this O'Neill story, Greta Garbo enters the audible ranks with “Anna Christie,” which she soon will begin. Frances Marion, who scenarioed some of her first silent films, is carry- ing the story into talkie fields, and Clarence Brown, one of the million-a- minute directors of movieland, will make the picture. Greta Keeps Acting Honors. Vivian Duncan may have carried off Greta's latest beau, Nils Asther, but no- body catries off the acting honors for Greta. She knows when to break the moment in a picture. Her smiles are never too vapid, her anger is sustained sufficiently long to be convincing. Her face is really famous for a certain blankness—a plasticity which throws allows to play across it. In the village spirit (taken from a story about Mary Eaton's marriage to Millard Webb) : “This is Mary Eaton’s first marriage.” ‘Which leads us to presume we may look for more. Some one remarked the other day that if long hair does come back into fashion this season or next it will be thanks to the new type of hats which successfully hide the loose ends of growing hair. On the other hand, if short hair holds its nwn. it may be because of the present type of hat which hides the short, stubby line of hair at the back and the wayward locks at the side, which proved a problem a year or so ago before hats of the drooping sort had come into fashion. ‘The one difficulty about pruent Mu is that they must fit with slon. This means that you i ither have your hats made to order or else be willing to spend hours shopping around to find the sort of hat you want in pre- cisely the right size and proportion. It is not merely enough to have the new hat large enough and not a bit too large around the crown. Its shallow crown must be of precisely the right depth, so that it will come far enough down at front, sides and back and yet not too far down. Always there must be enough droop at the back to cover the hair line. The question of adjusting the long back of many of the new hats with the voluminous fur collars of many of the new coats is less of a problem than it seems; for the coat collars are made to stand well out from the neck at the back, and the material of which the new HAT OF BEIGE AND BLACK SOLEIL FELT SHOWS NEW SHALLOW CROWN AND DROOPING SIDES. hats is made is soft enough to slip in ?em.h the coat collar without diffi- culty. “I have & number of long strings of beads—one of real amber and one of a very good imitation jade.
