INSURGENTS WIFE. TLLS OF RELEAS Signera Roselli = Describes “Foul, Vermin-Filled” Italian Prison. By Cable fo The Star. ' PARIS, September 21.—The story of her detention. in the vermin-infested prison of Sosta was told here by Signora Carlo Roselli, English wife of the anti- Fascist professor who with two com- panions escaped last July from the Italian political prison island of Lipari, off_the Sicilian coast. Finally released and permitted to leave Italy after the English Inaguage news- papers had taken up her cause, Signora Roselli arrived in Paris after Itallan authorities had arrested her, together with Dr. Nello Roselli, brother of Prof. Roselli, as a precautionary measure after the escape of the three men from Lipari. Prof. Roselli’s two companions | in the daring prison break were Fran- | cesco Nitti and Emilio Lusso. Health Failed in Prison. When first placed under arrest Sig- nora Roselll was with her mother-in- law at Cormaggiore, province of Turin. She learned of her husband's escape, she said, from the police who came to take her into custody. She was placed in what she called the “foul, vermin- infested” pricon of Sosta. In ill health, and unable to stand the rigors of prison lite she finally persuaded the doctor to certify to her condition. As a result she was removed to a ho- tel and there held under guard. It was not until after the British press began to take an interest in her case that she was finally released and permitted to leave the country. Prof. Roselll and his wife plan to remain in Paris for ;nn:le time, later making a visit to Eng- and, Husband Escaped in July. Prof. Roselli and his two companions, | Francesco Nitti and Emilio Lusso, were | Ttalian Deputies and leaders in the recurgence against the Fascists. Nitti | is understood to be a nephew of former Premier Nitti, while Lusso is a Sardi- | nian and once head of the so-called | “action party” promoting the movement | for the autonomy of Sardinia. Roselli| i the son of a friend of the Italian ! patriot, Mazzini. He was an active sup- porter of the Socialist leader, Filipo ‘Turati, who made his escape to France three years ago. The three made their escape from Lipari Jast July 27 and were supposed at the time to have found a refuge on the northern cost of Africa. Later they | managed to make their way into Eu-| Tope. l THE WEATHER I 1 District of Columbia and West Vir- morrow; possibly showers tomorrow little change in temperature; gentle northeast and east winds. Reading like the pages from some highly spiced jungle tale are the complaints made by villages to the north of the coastal city of Swatow. Ten Chinese have been eaten or badly mauled and one small girl knocked down and injured by man-eating tigers in the thickly populated districts of the province. ‘Tigers have been attacking in the daytime as well as at night, and ‘measures to cope with the menace are being considered. Among these is a proposal that whols, villages be organized to take up a trail. One tiger weighing 160 pounds was killed recently near ‘Thongkhlang. Special Dispatch to The Star., MADISON, Wis., September 12.—Red stars in the sky are young stars, and, typical of youth, 'théy are quite tiregul in the light which they shed. ‘Tempered by Father Time, the bright red stars get to the point where the variation of the light they emit becomes more regular, then quite steady as they change into yellow stars or into early | adult life. These ohservations are included in a A World of Brilliant, New Fashions! From our fashion bureau—*Black more prevalent than any other color—coats, wraps, afternoon dresses, evening gowns. Huffer of Washburn Observatory, University of Wisconsin, have made over a period of two years. The gradual change in cosmic time from red stars to white stars and back to red stars is one theory of evolution as applied to the heavens, says Prof. The big red stars have a very low density, and the materials of which they are composed are diffused through- out spheres whose diameters are mil- lions or hundreds of millions of miles. Their low temperature makes them red. Change Colors Like Iron. ‘The range in color of suwrs is like the change in the. colof of a plece of iron. When heated, idon is first red, then yel- low, then white. 80 a big red star is really cool, astronomically speaking, Wwith a temperature of perhaps 2,500 d grees centigrade. A star which has a temperature under 2,200 degrees is not eyen visible. But as the’ young stars get older they contract and become hot- ter. A massive white star—a hot one— may have a temperature of 35,000 de- grees. Then, if this theory of evolution is true, the hot stars gradually become The planets in also comparatively small and very near to us. They are visible because of re- flected light from the sun, If they were far out space among other stars they would not be visible. Trregularity of Light Studied, ‘When astronomers speak of time they deal in vast figures, of course, in cen- turies or millions of years. So also when they speak of distances they ex- pres their data in light years—the dis~ tance light travels in one year .at the rate of 186,000 miles s seconc. ‘What causes the irregularity of light coming from the big red stars is a ques- tion. Maybe it is due to spots like sun spots, caused by storms, during which hot material_shoots out of the mass. Perhaps, as Prof. Huffer tends to be- Heve, the variations are due to density and in currents within the star. About 200 glant red stars were in- cluded in the Wisconsin study. Famil- iar among these is Betelgeuse, the cooler, until they reach a dense state, brightest and northernmost, of the con- NEY WEEK Misses’ hlack Norma Roemney coat...black baby lynx collar, Paquin manner, spiral cuffs to elbow. $98.50. . The observations at Washburn ob- servatory are a part of a continuous study of the light of stars which is in progress. Various classes of stars are being studied. S Fundamental in this work is a piece of apparatus attached to the observa- tory telescope, which is sensitive to very slight changes in light. This photoelectric photometer, as it is called, is the result of 15 years of research by Ptof. Stebbins and his nssociates. ‘The lowering of A window shade in the room is :nough to set an indicator in the apparatus in motion. Light through the telescope falls on a photo- electric cell, setting up a very small electric current. ‘The current moves an indicator. With this attachement the light from very faint stars can be measured. G Luxemburg's new Bourse has had a weak start because of the inactivity of stocks in that eity. Mademoiselle does not diet. “My appetite is tremendous,” she savs. “But there are times when I feel ihat y food must harmonize with tha clothes T am wearing.
