TR o T L 24 iy ) THE EVENING. STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, “PADLOCK" ANSWER IS FILED BY HILL Building Owner Professes Ig- norance of Alleged lllicit Business in Garage. THE PALAIS ROYAL L’ECHO pePARIS Francis W. Hill, sr, 63, who owns premises at 2100 Fourteenth street, oc- cupled by Herbert Glassman as & garage, filed answer in the District Supreme Court yesterday to the “pad- lock” petition filed by United States Attorney Leo A. Rover and Assistant United States Attorney Harold W. Or- cutt, following an indictment Glassman and 11 alleged employes for alleged conspiracy to violate the liquor laws at this garage and at another con- ducted by Glassman at 1319 L street. Through Attorneys Easby-Smith, Pine & Hill, the owner tells the court that he had no knowledge of the alleged ille~ gal use of the property until he read in the papers of a seizure of & truck- load of liquor on the premises. He communicated with the police and with the United States Attorney’s office and announced his desire to cancel the lease, he says. As soon as the indict- ment was reported, Mr. Hill declares, he began ouster proceedings in the Municipal Court, but before the case was reached the injunction petition had been filed. Hill says if the building be padlocked for a year he will suffer irreparable loss and may be deprived of the savings of a lifetime, because the taxes and carrying charges on the property are so high that he cannot get along with- out the revenue from the building. He asks that the injunction proceedings be dismissed as to him. The owner adds a counter-claim, as provided by the national prohibition law, against Glassman, asking that a forfeiture of his lease be declared.
