The market in the stock closed with 620 bid and 630 asked. The stock has becen the sensation of the local board for the past two weeks, the present advance of 40 points hav- ing started at 580 only a short time ago. The stock has acted much the same as several New York bank stocks which started investors in that city and caused so much talk about a “bank stock era.” The nearest local bank stock to the price of Riggs‘is United Savings Bank. “This bank issue is very inactive, but last sold at $600 per share. Lanston Monotype Active Today. Lanston Monotype led the iozal Stock ‘Exchange in volume of trading today, 100 shares changing hands in a single block at 130 and five more at the same figure. Potomac Electric Power 5% per cent preferred sold at 106%, Union Trust Co. shares sold at 328, Barber & Ross at 17 and Federal-American Co. common at 461 Sixty shares of National Mortgage & Investment preferred came out at 4i; and 30 shares of Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty preferred at 73%. There was a good amount of bond trading to- day in Capital Traction, Potomac Elec- tric and Washington Gas issues. Quo- | tations were steady. Jones Heads Association. Edward H. Jones, president of the newly organized Chevy Chase Building & Loan Association, is a well known business man in the northwestern sec- tion of Washington as well as across the District line. Mr. Jones was formerly president of the Chevy Chase Savings Bank, is at present vice president of Edward H. Jones Co., Inc.. vice president of the Maryland Publishing Co., and president of the Rock Creek Parklands Corp. The new association has sent out cir- culars calling attention to the views of | various public men and private citi- | Zens on building and loan associations in general. The folder quotes Presi- dent Hoover as saying that these asso- ciations encourage thrift and ,have made their assets sound and worthy ©f confidence. “The best way to accumulate money is to resolutely save a fixed portion of your income, no matter how small the amount,” is a quotation accredited to Andrew Carnegle, while from John D. Rockefeller is the statement, “Real opportunity comes only to the man Wwith ready money.” Trust Company Raises Surplus. The directors of the Washington Loan & Trust Co., at & meeting late yester- day, ordered $100,000 transferred from undivided profits to surplus, This ac- tion raises the trust company's surplus to $2,300,000. The capital stock is $1,- 000,000. Chairman John Joy Edson presided at the meeting and President John B. Larner’s report showed that the year is proving highly satisfactory from a business standpoint. Anacostia Directors Meet. The regular 5 per cent quarterly dividend was declared by the directors of the Anacostia Bank at their meeting yesterday afternoon. It is payable Sep- tember 30 to stockholders of record on September 25. Maurice Otterback, the president, told the directors that the past nine months had been the best in the bank's history, adding that he believed the full I12-month showing would make a new record. Southern’s Outlook Bright. The matter of increasing the dividend on Southern Railway common stock to $10 annually, from $8, or declaring an extra payment later in the year, has not gone beyond the discussion stage, says the Wali Street Journal. People in close touch with the affairs of the road ascribe the recent run up of the stock to above 180 to belated recognition of the issue’s real value as well as to the possi- bility of an increase in the rate. They assert Southern has been a laggard in the rail market which followed the O'Fallon decision and was selling out of line for an $8 dividend payer. Southern will earn almost $14 on the Edward H. Early gains of 1 to 6 points in the active issues and 7 to 21 points in a few high priced specialties were cut down, or wiped out, and a long list of popular stocks sold 1 to 8 points be- low yesterday's final quotations. Some :neoocor‘:l"y took place in the early after- There was nothing in the day’s news to explain the sudden change in senti- ment. Call money was in comfortable supply at 8 per cent, with indications that the rate would be maintained for the rest of the week, due to the heavy accumulation of funds here, Close Is Weak. American Machine & Foundry ran up 21% points to another new high record, at 279 in the early trading. J. I Case jumped %; points to a new top at 451. Radio ran up more than 5 points to a new high record for the present stock at 114%, but lost all its gain in the midday reaction. The high-priced stocks tobog- ganed rapidly in the final hour. J. I Case, which had been as high as 451, slumped to 430, American Machine & Foundry was down from 279); to 261 ‘Westinghouse Electric from 2587 ta 2525, General Electric from 380 to 36¢ and United States Steel from 243 to 233%. Auburn Auto sold 15 points un- der the previous close and several others were off 4 to 8 points. The close was weak. Opening Is Strong. The market opened today with an im. pressive demonstration of strength Several blocks of 5,000 to 18,000 shares changed hands in the early trading Westinghouse Electric opened nearly points higher, United States Steel com- mon 2%, and Radio, United Corpora- tion, National Cash Register, North American, Pennsylvanian and Bethle- hem Steel showed early gains of a point o1 more. Standard Oil of New Jersey, which led the late upturn yesterday | opened fractionally lower, but Standarc | Ol of New York opened with a block of 18,000 shares at 47, up % and dupli- cating the year's high, Lowering of the call money rate to 1 per cent yesterday, coupled with the fact that the Bank of England agair made no change in its 512 per cent dis. count rate had a bullish effect on spec- ulative sentiment. Wall Street also was pleased with the heavy accumulation o! the high-grade oil shares, presumably for the account of investment trusts and by reports that other large invest. ment trusts were in the process ol formation. Establishment of a new high record by freight car loadings in the week end- ing August 31 brought fresh buying inte the railroad shares, but the early gain: were held to a point or so. Oils were again under heavy accumulation, re. cent gasoline price cuts along the Atlan. tic seaboard apparently being offset by a drop in crude oil production lasi week. Standard Oil of New York crossed 48 to a new 1929 high, Sun Oil moved up 3 joints and Pan-American B Standard Oil of California, Texas Cor- poration and a few others advanced & point or more.
