BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. NE wonders whether a President in fishing togs, an Ambas- sador in bathing suit or morning clothes, a cabinet member in his Summer flannels and a dashing young diplomat in tennis togs is not far more interesting at this season than in Midwinter when quite formal dress is the order of the day from morning until night. Not only the President, but ail of his guests lay aside their conventional dress while at the fishing lodge on the Rapidan River in Virginia, and Mrs. Hoover and the lady visitors adopt the very simplest of Summertime attire, ACH of the woman guests carry along a little hand work when they go to the President’s fishing camp and while they chat they also work, each one achieving quite a_good deal in the course of a week end visit. Mrs. Hoover has with her just now Mrs. McCracken, who accompanied her husband, Air Secretary of the Department of Com- merce, to the camp, and also Mrs. Allen Buchanan, whose husband is & White House aide. MR.S. LARGE, sister of Mrs. Hoover, who was almost continuously with her after she entered the White House, is motoring in New England and other parts of the country and while recently motoring through Massachusetts she called at Northampton to pay her re- to Mrs. Coolidge. However, the former First Lady missed seeing her and thus getting fresh news from the White House and her friends in Washington, as Mrs. Coolidge was with her mother, at the Northampton Hospital. 'O one seems to want to dine within four walls at this season, and one meets Ambassadors and Ministers, Senators and other men of note entertaining small parties at the Plage Deauville, a wonder- fully atmospheric place at Wardman Park Hotel, or at the Terrace 8ans Souci, at the Carlton, or at the Willard roof, where many ' officials meet for lunch, or perhaps at some country club not too far from the Capital. "A T one or other of these places one met last week the Ambassador of Mexico, the Ambassador of Turkey, secretaries and counselors of embassies and legations. It was on the Terrace Sans Souc at the Carlton that the Ambassador of Turkey gave a dinner for the air mission, members of which have been official visitors in Washington. Members of the mission stayed at the Carlton and added no little interest for the other guests who dined there. THER! will be remarkably few absentees from the Senate when it reconvenes tomorrow, many Senators hurrying from “back home” or from Europe or Summer resorts on this side to answer the first roll call. The arrival of so many members of the Upper House means great social activity, but of an informal nature, from now until the real official social season opens with White House an- nouncements. 2 AMONG the interesting engagements of local girls announced this week was that of Miss Henrietta Marie Forrest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Kcith Forrest of Georgetown and Seminary Hill, Va., to Midshipman Thomas James Thornhill, jr,, of San Antonio, Tex. Miss Forrest was reckoned among the attractive debutantes of this Winter, until the announcement came, and now she will con- tinue her studies and simply mingle with "the buds of the season, entertaining and being entertained. 'The marriage of Miss Forrest and Ensign Thornhill will take place right after he graduates from Annapolis in June, and it may be possible to have one of those famously lovely garden weddings for which Virginia is noted. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest and their daughter are spending the Summer at their Virginia place. Double Wedding in Church morning; whenMiss Florence L.
