ALDERMAN HANGS FOR RUM MURDERS Liquor Runner Pays for Slay-! ing Two U. S. Coast Guardsmen. By the Associated Press. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla, August 17.—Within a stone's throw of the wharf where he was landed in shackles | two years ago, after slaying three men | In a bloody battle aboard a Coast Guard | patrol boat at sea, James Horace Alder- man, 50-year-old rum pirate, today was hanged inside the metal seaplane hangar at the Coast Guard base here for the murder of two members of the vessel's crew. Displaying the same bravado that characterized his long criminal career, Alderman mounted the rough pine scaffolding in the hangar about 6 o'clock and a moment later the exe- cutioner sprang the trap. Fifteen min- ute& later a physician pronounced him Only necessary officials and a min- fster witnessed the execution, Judge Halstead L. Ritter, in signing the death ‘warrant, having ordered that news- paper men and other than those re- quired for the hanging be barred from the death chamber. Alderman was convicted in United States District Court of the murder of Victor Lamby and Sidney Sanderlin aboard a Coast Guard patrol boat 35 miles off the Florida coast on August 17, 1927. Robert Webster, a Secret Serv- ice operative, also was slain while Al- derman was in command of the boat on which he had been taken prisoner when the Government vessel overhauled his rum-laden craft. After being taken aboard the Coast Guard boat, Alderman suddenly whip- ed out a pistol and shot Sanderlin as e stood at the radio preparing to re- port the capture. Lamby was then shot down and Alderman herded the crew and Webster to the rail of the Coast Guard boat with the declaration that he was going to make them “walk the plank.” ‘Webster rushed the rum pirate while he was instructing Robert E. Weech, an accomplice, who was aboard the Tum boat, to sink his craft, and was killed. Other members of the crew then rushed Alderman and overpowered him. Weech turned State's evidence and was given a light sentence.
