President and Mrs. Hoover| Passing Midsummer Season Quietly in the White House Society in General Adopts Informal Program of | Festivities—Many Government Officials Now Absent From Cxty. \/ \/ remaining officials and_ diplomats in the Capital is_little more than meeting for luncheon or for dinner. The Presi- dent and Mrs. Hoover give no sign of searching for a cooler- clime, | realizin, perhaps, that the Executive Mansion, in its setting of treesi and fine lawns, is as comfortable as many Summer resorts. | Mrs. Heover, who has been active in the work of the Girl Scouts for many years, has not lessened her interest, though her activi- ties have necessarily been curtailed. She made a flying trip by motor last midweek, in her own car, to the Girl Scouts’ camp near Pine Grove Furnace, in Pennsylvania. She went there as honor- ary president of the Girl Scouts of America to bestow their highest honor, the Golden Eaglet badge, upon Suzanne Rutherford of Paxtang, Pa. Mrs. Hoover was accompanied by her sister, Mrs. J. H. Large and the latter’s son and daughter, Mr. Delano Large and Miss Janet Large, who returned to the White House with the First Lady the fol- lowing day after being guests over night of Miss Anne McCormick in her home, Rose Garden, 20 miles beyond the camp. Miss McCormick, who is Girl Scout commissicner for that section, is a sister of Mr. Vance McCormick, former chairman of the Democratic national committee. THE Vice President, Mr. Curtis, is having a delightful visit in his Topeka home and has been extensively entertained there during the week of his stay. He is expected to join his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Everett Gann, in their apartment tomor- row, and later they will all visit the Vice President’s daughters in the North. Mrs. Gann, though living in the large apartment in the May- flower, has kept her garden at her Cleveland Park home in proper order and goes there frequently to gather the gay blossoms ‘which are always in evidence in her apartment and which are tenderly nurtured in her home garden. ‘The members of the cabinet continue at their posts, following the lead of their Chief Executive, “running” off for a few days at a time and returning refreshed, to take up their labors again. ASHINGTON has settled down into the quiet informality of Midsummer, and what entertaining there is among the few UROPE continues to attract the diplomats, and yesterday the Ambassador of Germany and his family sailed for “home” to spend several months’ vacation. Though many have gone abroad this season, many have returned for.the Midsummer or expect to come back for the late season at some one of the scores of American resorts in| mountains or by the sea. The Mmister of Egypt, Mahmoud Samy Pasha, who sailed rather unexpectedly a fortnight ago, went to Eng- land on invitation of King Fuad of EgyPt, and will meet him in Londen. The Minjster will return in a few weeks and join Mme. Samy, who is remaining in the legation on Sheridan Cirele during his absence. The king’s invitation was a flattering attention to his repre- sentative at Washington. HE close of this month will see many changes in the diplomatic corps, and among the most regretted is the departure of the pop- ular Ministér of Rumania, M. George Cretziano and his charming daughter, Mlle. Jeanne Cretziano. e Minister will exchange posts with M. Carol A. Davilla, who, however, is a bachelor, and has no hostess to fill the place of Mlle.
