(#).—Even young- sters in kindergartens take their music seriously in Lowell, Children who are too young to learn music by note are taught to play by rhythm with such pleasing result that those who have not witnessed their training are astonished. So expert have they become that a dozen youngsters, not one of whom was more than 5 years old, recently gave a concert at the State Normal .School, using drums, tambourines, triangles and cymbals. Moreover, they were not directed by a teacher but by two of their own number, a boy and a girl, both of whom displayed a perfect sense of rhythm. Avenue EXCLUSIVE FORD SELLS LINE; BUYERS UNNAMED Pennsylvania Is Believed to Have Purchased Route Through Group. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, Mich., June 27.—Success- fully terminating his excursion into the transportation field, Henry Ford hes sold the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Reil road to an undisclosed group of vestors believed to represent the Penn- sylvania Rallroad. The sale was announced late yester- day by officers of the First Naticnal Bank in Detroit, through which the sale was made. Ford officials had announced Monday that negotiations for the sale of the line to the Pennsylvania Railroad were “almost completed.” Purchased in 1920 to round out the Ford program of controlling every step in production of his motor cars, the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton later was so renovated under the motor mlgnnte< administration that it became a paying business in its own right. Ford Rail System Startling. Much of its success was attributed to the fact that its business was obtained from other roads holding Ford trans- portation contracts, but Mr. Ford de- rived a great deal of pleasure from turning the once decadent road into a profitable enterprise and his methods were as startling in rallroad circles as were his innovations in the motor in- dustry. Instead of inaugurating a policy of economy, he radically increased ex- penditures for improvements. The wage scale of his automobile plants was brought into cabs and roundhouses, much to the dismay of other railrcad owners who subsequently fought him at every turn, and employes were permitted to obtain certificates’ which have paid 12 per cent annually. The announcement of sale of the railroad did not mention the price. Ford bought the line for $5,000,000, but in 1924, it was learned, it had earned more than $1,000,000 & year over the four-year piiiod of Ford administra- tion, ‘and in 1926 before the Interstate Commerce Commission. Ford attorneys argued that the rate-setting valuation of the road should be placed at $23,061,208. Units of Organization Linked. Widely separated units of the Ford industrial organization were welded to- gether by the D.; T. & I. It was in- tended originally to furnish a sure means of transporting coal from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky flelds to Detroit, but also carrled manufactured roducts across nearly all the larger t and West trunk lines between De- troit and the Ohio River. The total mllentu now is 529. Mr, Ford started negotiations to comblxw the Detroit, Toledo & Iron- ton and its subsidiary, the Detroit & Ironton, into one operating unit. Per- mission was granted the latter road to issue $500,000 of capital stock and $3,850,000 of first mortgage bonds to be u.-ad the acquisition of railroad prop- of th: Ford Transportation Co., romwd in 1911 to make extensions. The plan was proposed by the Ford in- terests after the Interstate Commerce Commission. had denied an application for an actual merger of the two railroads. Army Craft Return to Honolulu After Search for Frost. HONOLULU, June 27 (A —all 11 Army planes returned here vesterday after a 10-day search of the Island of Hawall in the vicinity of the volcanic peak, Mauna Loa, for wreckage of Jack Frost's plane, the Golden Eagle, which disappeared during the Dole flight in 1927, without a definite clue. Ezra Frost, who came here several weeks from his home, at Pelham Menor, N, Y, and enlisted the Army’s aid in the search, reiterated his belief that his brother and Gordon Scott, navigator of the Golden Eagle, were lost at sea.
