[IN/KING SCHOOLS Closer Co-operation and Library Supervision Is Planned. By the Associated Press. TOLEDO, Ohio, June 27.—Greater co-operation between all agencies of the National Catholic Educational Associa- on, including an interuniversity clear- ing house and diocesan supervision of parochial school libraries, was urged by the leaders of Catholic education, who spoke at the sessions of the association’s twenty-sixth annual convention yester- day. The conference was to be concluded with a general assembly at noon today, when officers were to be elected. Rev. Maurice S. Sheehy of the Catho- lic University of America, Washington, D. C., read before the college section a Tepo! rt based on conditions in 32 Roman Clthollc colleges for men, made by the committee on personnel work, of which he is chairman. “Catholic universities have the privi- lege of rejecting whichever applicants they choose without giving reasons for so doing,” he said. “This permits this group of colleges to reserve its facilities | for those best qualified to make use of them.” Rev. Ferdinand Moeller, was elected president of the deaf mute section of the association. Rev. Daniel Higgin, Kirkwood, Mo., was elected vice president. Prancis Fitzgerald, St. Thomas Col- lege Library, Scranton, Pa., was elected president of the library association. Sister Mary Reparata, Rosary College Library, Chicago, was elected vice presi« | dent. HUTCHINS A DARK HORSE. CHICAGO, June 27 (#).—Robert M. Hutchins, 30, who becomes president of the University of Chicago next month, was the darkest kind of a dark horse, it ‘was revealed today by Harold F. Swift, president of the.board of trustees. During the preliminary search for a president Dr. Hutchins was not even mentioned, Swift said. Ninety-five prominent educators .were listed and the choice was to be from among them. Later, at the suggestion of the univer- sity auditor, the name of “that young fellow, School,” was added. Cleveland, | Hutchins, dean of the Yale Law | THE EVENING STAR. Cat Adopts-Rats After Having Slain Mother of Brood By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, June the big Maltese cat which has been the scourge of rats at the on Paper Grading Co. warehouse, has become foster motm to five young unweaned 27.—~Molly, A pflrte‘r Monday night came upon the cat and her adopted brood and, not believing his eyes, called his boss. Later newspaper cameramen made a photographic record of what would have seemed without it to be hardly plausible. The opinion was expressed that Molly had killed the mother of the brood and then had assumed the maternal role herself. She refuses to permit any one to take the tiny rats from her. INDICT FILM ACTORS. Grifith and McKee Face Charges of U. 8. Tax Fraud. LOS ANGELES, June 27 (#)—Ray- mond Griffith and Raymond McKee, film actors, were under indictment by the Federal grand jury today, charged with defrauding the = Government in their tax returns for 1925 and 1926. Edward H. Hayden, a tax counselor, | also was under’ indictment in connec- tax return for 1927. In a tax lien filed in Federal Court by Galen Welch, internal revenue col- lector, Norman Kerry, another screen player, is required to pay $1,116.97 on his’ 1928 income, which the collector asserted he had “forgotten.” SCHOOL LIKE HOME. Institution Appears as an Old Man- sion From Outside. | CHICAGO (#).—A public school with | the environment of the home has been | built in Ravinia, a suburb. With its three and one-half acres, the school looks like an old mansion. In the rooms for the kindergarten and lower grades there are fireplaces and | the furnishings of a home. Rooms for the upper grades approach the gener- ally accepted severe lines of classroom, but wherever possible a softening in- fluence has been added. The school yard is abundant with shrubs and flowers, and along verandas and windows there are flower boxes. Ravinia is popular with well known artists and musicians.
