EPCO EARNINGS SHOW LARGE GAIN Report for First Five Months cf Year Made to Com- mission. . BY EDWARD C. STONE, Total net earnings of the Potomac Electric Power Co. for the first five months of the present year were $194.- 550.85 ahead of the same period in 1928, and for the month of May, $20,645.41 ebove May, 1928, sccording to the statements fiied with the Public Utdlities Commis- sion. v Gross earnings from operations in May amounted to ing expenses were $328,466.12 in com. 272 a year ago, ing net earn- ings from opera- tion of $459,520.07, compared with $430,532.39 & year ago. The Potomac Power Co.'s gross earn- ings for the first five months of the present year reached $4,176,071.09, com- pared with $3.943,668.55, an increase of $232.402.54. Operating expenses requir- ed $1675.909.23, in comparison with $1,635.809.25 in the corresponding period in’ 1928, a reduction in operating costs of $40,099.98. Net earnings from operations during the period amounted to $2,500,161.86 against $2.307.859.30, an increase this year of $192.302.56. Miscellaneous in- come totaled the sum of $66,120.11, com- pared with $53,046.83 in 1928, a gain of $13,073.28, leaving after all other re- ductions a total net income for the five months of $1,760,369.69 in comparison with the same period’s total a year ago of $1,565,978.84. ‘W. Earnings Reveal Gains. ‘The Washington Railway & Electric Co.’s statement filed with the Public Utilities Commission reveals increases in net earnings in May compared with the same month a year ago and also for the first five months of 1928 compared | ‘with the corresponding 1928 period, Operating revenues for May, 1929, totaled $512,693.46, compared with $503,081.62. Operating expenses and taxes required $416,178.56, against $395,920.05 in May, 1928. Operating | income after the deduction of the above operating expenses amounted to $96.- 514.90, against the higher figure a year ago of $107,161.57. Non-operating income amounted to £351,402.12, compared with $318,313.16 a year ago, and the ocmpany's total gross income reached $447,917.02. Last year this item was $425474.73. The usual deductions left a total net in- come for May of $389,302.95, against $360.883.43 in May, 1928, an increase in_the recent month of $28,419.52. The five months figures show total operating revenues of $2,476,933.44 com- pared with $2,468,699.37. Operating ex; s penses required $2,025, $1,977,42840 a year ago. Gross income less operating ex- penses and taxes reached the sum of $1,221,765.20, compared with $1,182,- 917.22. The usual deductions from gross were $319,779.35, against $324,- 34425 last year, leaving a total net income for the five months of $901,- 985.85, in comparison with $858,572.97 a year ago. or a gain so far this year of $43,412.88. New High for Washington Gas. Twenty shares of Washington Gas Light stock sold on the local stock ex- change today at 12512, a new all-time high mark in this issue. The market closed with 124!, bid and 126 asked. Prices remained strong in moderate trading in other issues, Capital Traction selling ex dividend at 92%, Washington Railway & Electric preferred at 96, Federal-American Bank at 332, Mer- chants Transfer & Storage common at 120 and Mergenthaler at 105, ex dividend. Potomac Power 515 per cent preferred came out 107, and 300 shares of Na- tional Mortgage & Investment preferred registered 412. Bond trading was rather. light at firm prices. Banker Leaves for Maine Resort. Edward J. Stellwagen, president of the Union Trust Co., leaves Washington tomorrow for the Poland Springs House at Poland Springs, Me. Mr. Stellwagen has been a regular Summer visitor at the Maine resort, for more than 40 years. He has been well acquainted with four generations of the Rocker tamily, one of the most famous fam- ilies of hotel keepers in America. John B. Larner, president of the Washington Loan & Trust Co., left yesterday for a vacation at his country home near Mifflentown, Pa. Harry G. Meem, vice president of the trust com- pany, is in charge during Larner's ab- sence, William P. Folger, chief national bank examiner of tye fifth district, was a guest of the local bankers at the weekly luncheon yesterday. He is leav- ing Washington to become executiv vice president of the Norfolk National Bank of Commerce & Trust. Edward L. Hillyer, vice president of the Union Trust Co., ieaves for Maine tomorrow, where he will pass the Sum- mer at Northeast Harbor, near Bar Harbor. Mr. Hillyer has nearly recov- ered from his long illness.
