T A R 0 0 S A ! ARG TOBENTERPRETED = Builders Will Be Selected to Give Concreie Expression in -Better Homes Competition. Perhaps the most interesting and im- a«unt feature to result from the na- lonal better homes architectural com- tion being conducted by the Home ers’ Institute and sponsored by The ' Btar in this region, will be the final in- tion of the prize-winning plans 4n actual houses. Under the supervision of The Star &nd the Wl!hh:gwn Real Estate Board, Jocal builders will be selected to give concrete expression to the dreams of the three architects whose plans will have been chosen as outstanding by the Jury of awards, headed by Frederick Vernon Murphy, dean of.the School of drchitecture of Catholic’ University. During the construction of these |pl model homes The Star will keep its Temders advised of the progress by illus- 'ated articles and in additien will ublish the cost of the various phases of the work, thus making the project of actual educational value to pro- spective home owners and home build- ers, Competition Nation-wide. “The erection of homes following prize- winning plans will be more than local. In each of the 13 districts into which the Nation-wide competition has been divided these model dwellings will be built. In addition the national prize designs will find expression in actual homes. The place for the construction of houses built after the national prize- winning plans has not been selected, however. ‘The construction cost figures to be imade available as a resuit of the build- ing of the homes are expected to be of greatest value, and this was a consider- able factor in the inducement of the National Association of Real Estate Boards to end its aid and promise the co-operation of its constituent mem- bers, It is thought that the findings will be of much assistance to the as- sociation as well as to the builders and architects and the general home- seeking public. In offering the aid of his organization, EVENING It should have outlets and con- nections for modern household laundry machinery and lighting. Room for Domestic Purposes. s An additional requirement in basement plan is that part of it should be utilized for a room which can be used for recreational or other domestic purposes. It is suggested that' this space be established as a game room, with space for pocket billards, a radio room, den. music room, children's play- room, or for some purpose which con- tributes to the social or domestic activi- ties of the household. An open fire- place in the basement is desirable. It is not necessary that the heating plant be separated from this room, but this is left optional with the designer. Lo- cation of the heating plant, incinerator, combustion chamber and the electrict lllglhtmg systems should be shown on the ns. It is necessary for competitors to in- dicate the layout of suggested kitchen equipment. The jury will scrutinize this kitchen plan, having in mind the following points: The efficiency adapta- tion and use of standard kitchen units; the practical relationship between the location of these units and the elec- tric refrigerator, sink, incinerator and other equipment; the practical location of the electric refrigerator, the use of which is required and which makes it possible to do away with the problem of outside ice service. ‘The jury will also give careful con- sideration to the modern facilities of electrical service, telephone service, radio and other domestic wutility sys- tems which are to be installed in the house. The consideration will include the spacing of outlets, lighting fixtures, radiators and the provision of necessary connections for adequate service in heating, lighting and the operation of domestic equipment. Much importance will also be given the practical arrange- ment of plumbing fixtures, all of which are to be indicated on the plans. SORORITY ENDS MEETING.
