It was to this table that Mr. and Mrs. Happy Jack proudly led a little family of four, as soon as the latter were old enough. With always plenty to eat, these young gray squifrels grew fast. Very proud of their family was Happy Jack, and a wonderful time they all had early in the morring as they frisked about on the old stone wall and in the trees near by. Farmer Brown's Boy used to delight in watching them. Early one morning, Happy Jack had gone over for an extra early breakfast. He was sitting on the edge of the table . Cervine animal. 5. Aim high. ANSWER TO YESTERDAY'S PUZZLE. j<ieial IT] ETR PNERVIE] |in the stone wall. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS —whieh, you know, was a big flat stone It was a beautiful Spring morning. ‘The feathered folk were singing and everything was as peaceful as could be. Happy Jack was nibbling a bit of food rather daintily as he waited for his family to arrive. Now, unknown to any one, Robber the Rat had moved over from Farmer Brown'’s barn to a hole under the old stone wall, not far from Happy Jack's table. From the entrance to that hole he had watched Happy Jack and his family stuffing themselves morning afg? morning. Later, when he was sure it no one was watching, he had stolen over to that big flat rock and greedily eaten what was left. Then he had scur- ried back into his hole, for the of Robber the Rat are ways of di ness, and he does not like the sunlight. On this particular morning Farmer Brown's Boy was up unusually early. He had left a bountiful breakfast on that flat stone before anapy Jack ar- rived. There were several things that Hlfiy Jack was particularly fond of. ... is the best breakfast I've had for a long time,” thought Happy Jack as he nibbled and waited for Mrs. Happy Jack and the children to arrive. “I wish the family would hurry up. If they don’t come soon I am afraid I shall be greedy.” It was just then that there wes a sudden rush along the top of the old stone wall and Happy Jack looked up to see Robber the Rat—big, dirty, evil- looking—rushing straight at him with all his sharp teeth showing. Happy Jack almost turned a back somersault, ren for the nearest tree and climbed it. There he was joined by Mrs. Happy Jack and the children, and they all sat there and chatted and scolded, while Robber the Rat, grinning between bites, was little lef Happy Jack was the first one to_venture down. He moved cautiously. There was something rather terrible looking about Robber Rat. Jack reached the flat stone. Rol the Rat did not appear. Mrs, Happy Jack and the children ventured down to join Happy Jack. It was rather a sorrowful breakfast party. You see, all of the best of the food had dis- appeared and there wasn't enough left to give them much more than a bite all around. . Quintessence. . Premium on money exchange, . Curves. . Ebb. .
