Hege, chairman of the safety committee last night at the E. V. Brown School. Conditions in that fection have been under fire for some me M. O. Eldridge, assistant director of the Traffic Bureau, indorsed the plan submitted by Mr. Hege and commended him and H. V. Schreiber on their ex- tensive study of the traflic conditions. Mr. Hege exhibited a chart showing the moverent of traffic at this inter- section during the rush hours of the day and presented a list of solutions for the traffic problem. As a means of safeguarding vehicu- lar and pedestrian traffic along the avenue near Albemarle street, it was proposed, among other things, to pre- vent parking in ail directions, approxi; mately 50 feet from the corners, and that a traffic signal be installed at the intersection including signals for pedes- trians; that crosswalks be plainly mark- ed and maintained; that car loading zones be provided; that a double traf- fic lane be marked to encourage use of this space by two vehicles simul- taneously; that the 30 mile speed limit be retained; that arterial highway stop signs be retained at all intersections not controlled by lights, and finally that all regulations be rigidly. enforced. “The time has come,” said Mr. Eld- ridge, “when children should be taught that ‘the street is no place to play.’ In answer to & communication from the Southwest Citizens' Association favoring the abolishment of the Traffic Bureau, Mr, Hege reported that it was his contention that the-traffic branch of the police department ought to be ehlarged and not abolished.
