22 REIGN OF TERROR “TOPPLES IN SIGILY Mafia Crushed by Long Trial, With Dozens of Leaders Sent to Prison. B the Associated Pr TERMINT IMERESE, Sicily, June 7. +-The reign of terror of the Mafia is over. As Prefect Mori begins to scatter | among the jalls and penitentiaries of this island 150 of the last group of the Mafia ringleaders, recently convicted and sentenced by the courts, Sicily is| settling down to a life of production and peace Romantic figures, who after all, were only cattle thieves and murderers on-a great scade, the Mafia for 15 years held Sicily paralyzed with terror. North and South America also felt the influence of the dread organization Feuds Swept United States. Internal feuds within the criminal so- elety were found settled in blood within the United St Letters from the | Americas were introduced during the | trial showing that a fair percentage of | the cattlo stolen by the Mafia was sent | to_the Western Hemispliere. The extent of the crimes of the pres- ent group of the Mafia was so vast that | the court labored for nine months mere- 1y hearing the evidence and arguments. The jury was out for seven days, con- sldt’nnc 30,000 questions and returning | #,000 answers to them. Humans Worth Less Than Cattle. The Mafia group just dissolved, is be- tieved to be the of the notorious Sicilian organization. It was founded | in 1913 at Mistretta, primarily to carry on family and district feuds. It im- | mediately began to wreak its will on the countryside by driving off the cattle and extorting money. Human life, too. was of small value to the Mafia, much Sess, in fact, than that of cattle. Selling _agents were established in Palermo, Catania, Castelbuono, Messina, Niessia, Caronia, Polizzi, Mezzoniso, Corleone, San Stefano, Gangi, Capizzi, Agira, Villafrati, San Mauro, Alia and | Mazzarino, and documents introduced at the trial indicated that there were sgents in_America. At the head of this vast organization was the Attorney Ortoleva, & man of influence, skill and brains. His office was the general headquarters and the high court of the Mafia. Here it was determined what amount of tribute should be levied. Ortoleva himself was the justice. Betrayed By Member. The Mistretia section of the Mafia | was betrayed by one of its own num- | ber. Almost immediately thereafter he paid for his desertion with his life. Prefect- Mori had enough information to enable him to proceed. With the help of the government at Rome, he rounded up the Mafia and brought 169 of the ringleaders before the courts. Ortoleva was among them, but he died at the beginning of the trial. - Of the Temainder alk but a mere handful were convicted. Sofie were sentenced to the penitentiary for 2§ years. 11 FREED IN LEADVILLE LIQUOR CASE TRIALS | Two Prosecution Witnesses Arei Charged With Perjury as Third Is Released.
