NEW YORK, April 20.—Although customary week end evening up of speculative accounts was witnessed on the Curb Exchange today, the market readily - absorbed realizing sales and maintained its recent strong undertone, Strength was most striking in the power and light stocks, with United Gas Improvement, American Superpow~ er B and International Telephone & 4 | Telegraph the outstandifig performers. ¢ 5y | There was also strong demand for the 13 Zdnith Radi y investment trusts. Sales in General Electric of England was con- hundreds. siderably firmer on the news that the American group had won the fight , | @gainst the foreign opposition to par- ticipate in the affairs of the company. There was a report in circulation of a possible union of the company with the Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd. Douglas Aircraft featured its section with a sharp advance into new high ground. Continental Diamond Fiber also went to the best level in its history on the big increase in profits in 1928 revealed in the company’s listing appli- cation. Other active and strong stocks included Deere & Co. Hiram Walker, Newton Steel, Firestone Tire, American+ Rolling Mills and Taggart. Ford of Canada developed fresh weak- ness, off more than half a dozen points from the preceding close. Aviation Cor poration reacted sharply and Aluminum eased off slightly. Among the ofls the principal strength was displayed by Humble. Metal stocks were dull. o BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Epecial Dispatch to The Star. Today we have Cutten, Raskob, Breen, Durant, Higgins, the Fisher brothers and a host of others. The whirling tides of the recent bull market have receded far enough for us to see whose heads are towering above | the rest. They are a gallery of new faces, new groups and new names, names which Wall street's elder states- man, George F. Baker, probably never heard of until he was past 60. Veteran Grain Trader. Arthur F. Cutten, veteran grain trader, was one of the original “bulls” on Montgomery Ward stock. He be- gan to acquire shares when they ‘were selling around 80 and pyramided on the ‘way up to above 400, when the company declared a stock dividend. He also is reported to havve large in- terests in Radio Corporation, Atlantic Refining Co., Loose-Wiles Biscuit Co. holdings became so large. that they formed a personal securities corporation to take care of them. George F. Breen, a quiet, unassuming trader, is one of the most popular figures in Wall Street. He has “made markets” in hundreds of issues for some of the largest banking houses in Wall Street. He is closely asso- clated with the Pisher and Cutten in- terests. Durant’s Activities. ‘William C. Durant, head of the motor company bearing his name, has made several fortunes in automobile stocks, including General Motors, Chrysler, Hudson and Hupp. He was reputed to have been the central figure behind the sensational rise in U. 8. Cast Iron Pipe and has large interests in Inter- national Combustion and Packard. Joseph Higgins is one of the bi it traders cn the New York Curb Market. His huge bids for certain curb stocks have made exchange history. He is jokingly referred to as “buy 50,000 shares Joe.” 3 Commonwealta Ed: 4 Am Maracaibo Go. 3 Argo O 08 Cities 17 Cittes Serv 'n ovalty.
