i : l How to Keep From Growing Old.—By Williams | BEDTIME STORIES Sammy Jay Brings News. Look out for self. but also try To warn your friends of danxer nigh. Sammy Jay. The Black Shadows of the night had fled. At the very first ray of daylight Honker the Goose and his flock had awakened. They were, rested and re- freshed. They were ready, if need be, to continue their journey toward their distant home in the Far North. They swam about. They made their toilets. But all the time Honker, with head held high and sharp eyes watching the shore, kept guard. There was a lot of “GOOD MORNING, HONKER; GOOD MORNING, EVERYBODY!” HE SHOUTED. gabbling among them, for Geese dear- ly love the sound of their own voices. They are social folk. They like to talk things over. And they were ready for breakfast. They remembered the corn that they had found the evening be- fore and they were eager to go look for more of it. Honker, however, would not let them. He was waiting. He knew full well that at a time like this nothing is lost and much may be gained by waiting. He wanted full daylight before he allowed any of his flock too near the shore. He Vs == jt ; - V — BY THORNTON W. BURGESS had led them all the way up from their Winter home in the Sunny South with- out the loss of a singie member of the flock and he did not intend to lose one now by carelessness. So he would not let them go in close to the shore, where the night before they had found the corn scattered in the water. He would not let them go until he himself had made sure that no danger was hidden close by. Wonderfully sharp are Hon- ker's eyes and he wanted light enough to use them to the best advantage. So he kept the flock waiting and all about it grew lighter and lighter. It was just as Honker was about to give the word for the flock to get breakfast that far away in the Green Forest, in the direction of the Green Meadows, he heard the voice of Sam- my Jay. As usual, Sammy Wwas screaming. _“Thief, thief, thief!” he screamed. Honker raised his head a little higher, if anything. Sammy cer- tainly was headed that way. Every time he scremmed his voice sounded a little louder. Honker spoke to the members of his flock. Slowly they all moved up the pond in the opposite di- rection from which Sammy was ap- proaching. Presently Sammy flashed into sight and alighted in a tree on the edge of the pond. “Good morning, Honker! Good morn- ing, everybody!” he shouted. “I heard you arrive, but it was too late for me to get over here yesterday afternoon. Welcome back!” Honker swam slowly forward. “Why,” he demanded, “were you crying ‘Thief,’ thief’?” Sammy Jay’s eyes twinkled. “Just to let you know that one of those two- legged creatures is in the Green Forest and_headed this way,” said he. “Do you mean a hunter with a ter- rible gun?” demanded Honker. “I didn't say so,” replied Sammy. Honker looked at him hard and long. Then he swam back to his flock. “We'll wait,” said he. Sammy Jay flew back the way he had come, but he did not go far. Presently they heard him again. “Thief, thief, thief!” Then Honker's quick’ ears caught the sound of a snapping twig. Some one was coming through the woods and Sammy was keeping just ahead of him, still screaming, “Thief!” (Copyright, 1929 The Daily Cross-Word Puzzle (Copyright, 1920.) . Speechless. .
