By the Assoclated Press. SALEM, Ark, April 16. — A World War veteran today faced murder charges for the death of his 32-year- old English war bride and his three sons in a fire which razed their farm dwelling near here a month ago. ‘The arrest of Ed Burris yesterday shocked this community, which for a month had accepted his story of the accidental nature of the tragedy. Burris reported he found his family trapped in the flaming house on his return home the night of March 18, and that his desperate attempts to rescue them ended with his dragging from the house two beds which con- tained the charred bodies of his wife, Maud, and the three small boys. ‘What information county officers had against Burris was expected to come to light at the preliminary hearing today as well as the solution of Burris® rela- tions with a Miss Koelling whom, offi- cers said, they planned to question as to the man’s movements on the night of the tragedy. County investigators said they found that Burris walked 2 miles to the Koell- ing home for assistance the night of the fire when he might have called upon any one of a half_dozen neigh- bors who lived almost within shouting distance of the Burris home. Burris met his wife while serving as a member of the American Expedition- ary Forces. Their romance brought the girl to this country after the war and they married. They came here from New Mexlco about a year ago. KEAN MAY BE NAMED TO D. C. COMMITTEE New Jersey Senator Is Being Ru- mored for Republican Post on Group. Senator Kean, Republicanm, of New Jersey, may be assigned to membership on the Senate District committee, it was rumored on Capitol Hill today. ‘The Republican committee on com- mittees has not completed the task of assigning new Senators, but, according to reports in circulation today, Senator Kean is under consideration for a place on the District group. A definite an- nouncement of new committee assign- ments probably will not be made for several days. So far as can be learned, none of the present Republican members of the District committee will be changed. There are no indications yet who the new Democratic members of the Dis- trict committee will be. The Demo- cratic steering committee is working on committee assignments, but has not con- cluded its work. Three Democratic members of the District committee jn the last Congress were defeated in the November election, namely, Senators Bruce of Maryland, Edwards of New Jersey and Neely of West Virginia, If it should be decided to change the ratio of membership on the District committee as a result of the increased Republican majority now in the Senate it would mean that only two of the Democratic vacancies would be filled. PADLOCKS ASKED FOR TWO BUILDINGS Violations of Prohibition Laws Are Charged in Petition for Court Injunctions. Applications for padlock injunctions were filed today by United States At- torney Leo A. Rover and Assistant United States Attorney Harold W. Or- cutt against tenants and owners of premises 2609 Wade road southeast and 312 F street northeast. The court is told that John S. Harley and Martha Harley, tenants of 2609 Ware road southeast have been charged with nu- merous violations of the national pro- bition law, dating back to August last. The owners of that property are said to be Elbert R. Zirkle and Martha P. Zirkle. Mary Falasco is alleged to be the tenant at 312 F street northeast, which is owned by Maria N. Consorta. At this place, the court is advised, complaints have been made of nlleged dry law violations. Both properties are said to have become nuisances under the Vol- stead act, Two Nominations Favored. ‘The Senate interstate commerce com- mittee ordered favorable reports today on the nominations of Maj. Gen. Charles McK. Saltzman, retired. to be a member of the Aadio Commission for the fourth zone and Oscar B. Ccluuim former Governor of Texas, to be m;omber of the Railway Board of Medi- ation.
