Water abloom with the blue of un- seen sky, fringed with the lacy green of new grass and tender leaf, scarcely rippling to the touch of the tiny fall. Turf like a magic carpet spread to in- vite. Low sunrise rays gilding rough bark to gold and stainless shadows to the hues of royal silks. A bird, scar- let as royal blood, glided to the edge of the pool and dipped and drank, its eyes aglow with the light of sheer joy in being! Here was enchantment! A butterfly, painted by Aurora’s own fingers, hov. ered and sank, enraptured. Soft flut- ter of wings on overhead branch and the bird by the pool sprang alert and warbled its lovenote, like a joyous cry of ecstasy in the revelations of Spring! A leafy background parted, and eyes of mystery looked out into the watcher’s jown! | Phyllis forgot to breathe. The open= | ing in the leaf screen closed. With firm, sure step she bounded down over root and stone, down to the dell's carpet of green, and poised as had the listening bird. She waited for some sound. Her eyes darted expectant from covert to covert, like an eager child’s begging for anticipated sur- prise. Then in the unchanging still- ness, Ler lovely figure subtly drooped. Had some expected companion aisap- pointed her? Was this a trysting place? Was some lover recreant? She cupped her hands about her lips and called—in a trilling note no fluted tone of wood-pipe ever matched. She listened—and dropped down to hide at some fancied sound of approach. She walted—then rose suddenly disconso- late. Her gaze roved slowly, then came straight out of her far realm into the here, and fixed, in pleading! A choking sound came from the man at Phyllis’ side. She turned. He was kneeling on the rock with his clenched hands covering his eyes. In an instant she understood, as if the whole long mystery were written against the pines. She knew what it had been he had found and lost. She guessed at what it had been his enemies had held over him. She understood that it had been his last scrap of treasure of which she perhaps had robbed him. She knew what it had been that had taken his love away from her. She rose slowly to her feet and walked out to the edge of the rock. The scene was gone—she almost forgot that it had been hers she had seen it! She had been looking into a man’s heart! She stood for a long minute staring out across the cities’ far sparkling sea. Was it the woman who had vanished down there in that dim gulf with whom he had been in love? Who was she, that Darling of Dawn, whom he had found and lost, and found—and lost again? For she could be no real woman who was found at last only among the Star.) of _MOVING, PACKING & STORAGE. She turned back toward the man behind her. He was still on his knees on the rock, but his hands rested poised on their fingertips and he was staring at her, as if it were in her white figure against the night that he saw his ghost! 'NEW LAW SOUGHT T0 AID TREASURER Plan to Allow Prince Georges Offi- cial to Succeed Self Put Forward. Special Dispatch to The Star. UPPER MARLBORO, Febryary 15.— The proposition to have the Legislature now in session amend the law affecting the tenure of office of the county treas- urer so as to make that officer eligible to succeed himself, has aroused consid- erable interest throughout Prince Georges County, and the sentiment lg- pears to be strongly in favor of the change. The clerk of the Circuit Court, the members of the Orphans’ Court and the register of wills are rot limited in their tenure. Summerfield D. Hall, the present clerk, has been re-elected sev- eral terms, and the same is true of Register of Wills William T. Davis, Re- publican. A number of years ago a county treasurer defaulted, and the vresent law resulted. It is generally agreed that this law now works a dis- | tinet hardship, especially in the case of R.
