TREASURY OF U. 3. 10 GET D. C. TAXES: Deposit of Receipts in Twol Local Banks to Be Discontinued. Collector of Taxes Chatham M. Towers | has been directed by the District Com- | missioners to make the necessary ar- rangements with the United States ‘Treasurer for the daily deposit in the Treasury of all receipts of his office under the order of the controller gen-| eral discontinuing the use of two local | banks for depositing checks received | by the District Government for taxes or other obligations. Mr. Tower will report to the Commis- sloners promptly the arrangements he | makes with the Treasury Department | for the deposit of such collections, an ! arrangement which will necessitate, it | was said, the addition of clerks in both | offices. The Commissioner’s order was on | the recommendation of District Audi- | tor Daniel J. Donovan, which followed a finding by Controller General Mc-| Carl that the practice of making daily | deposits of suoh checks alternately | with the Federal-American National | Bank and the District National Bank is illegal. Donovan, however, wrote a lengthy report holding that the prac- tice, in vogue here for at least hall a century, was legal. H. T. Tate, Treasurer of the United | States, has informed Mr. Donovan that | the daily dmfmsit of checks in the | Treasury would probably call for the | employment of two additional clerks by the Treasury Department to clear the checks. It was declared possible today that some change would have to be made in the office of the col- lector of taxes also under the new arrangements. The only effect it is likely to have | on taxpayers is a slight delay in the | mailing of tax receipts. PRINCE GEORGES BODY | IN FIGHT ON GAMBLING! Early and State’s Attorney J. Frank Parran, to curb gambling which it was said has become so promiscuous as to be a pub- lic menace. A resolution was adopted indorsing the completion of the permanent im- provement of the .River Road from Kenilworth, D. C. to Gasch’s corner on the National Defense Highway in Bladensburg. Part of this road has been built. Robert Marshall, Clifford L. John- son and A. R. Lee were appointed a special committee to urge the members of the Prince Georges County dele- gation in the legislature, the county board of education and the county commissioners to support a bond issue, the proceeds of which would be -used | to build a senior-junior high school at Decatur Heights on a site ulready bought by the county for the pur] Annull election of federation of postponed until February . For the first time since the general | strike the total of the recipients of un-| employment insurance exceeded 1,-| | This staggering increase of workless men and women is attributed officially to the fact that a large number of | workers employed for the Christmas | trade had to be dismissed when the | holiday shopping period was over. | At the beginning of 1928, great hopes | were held for a revival of trade. The hopes, however, were not realized, and | this year it appears that the question of finding work for over 1,500,000 Eng- lish men and women will be the mos British Sunday Excursions| $3.50 Philadelphia $3.25 Chester $3.00 Wilmington AND RETURN Sundays, January 13, 27 SPECIAL TRAIN eaves Washington - - AM. . leaves Phllnfltlnhu adelohia 7: M onester M.
