SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 10.—The bond market today had the advantage of the easiest call money rates in nearly two months, but it did not act much dif- ferently than during the period of high rates. Some of the better grade issues were up fractionally. Again there was con- siderable irregularity due to the nar- rowness of the market, which tends to exaggerate the importance of daily price | changes. The competition with stocks continues strong and overshadows normal bond market tendencies. In today's new offerings, for instance, over 85 per cent out of $15000,000 were stocks which follow the tendency that has become pronounced since last July of arranging corporation financing through capital issues rather than by means of mort- gages or debentures. There is a good demand throughout the Street for all bond issues that, carry warrants. Blocks of such bonds are difficult to obtain. This explains the very heavy advance subscriptions for the $25.000,000 American International Corporation convertible 5'.s. which are to be offered next week. Other smaller issues of like character are in the making. The old convertibles were prominent at higher prices New Jersey 4125 went above 190 after closing vesterday at 187. There was an active inquiry for International Ce- ment 55, Loew 65 and Abraham & 51,5 at substaniially better The foreign convertibles also buoyant, especially the Italians, which were up 1'% to nearly 4 points, German bonds with warrants attached showed a further awakening to their | speculative possibilities. Among miscellaneous industrial bonds the strength in Hudson Coal 5s was outstanding. They have now rallied about 4 points from their recent low price. ~Lorillard 5s and Certainteed Products 5!%s each lost a point. There | was an indifferent market in the junior rails. A large block of Tokio Electric 6s is being marketed with the result that these bonds are now a point under their issue price. South Americans acted well today. Houses with foreign connections report a steady repurchase of dollar bonds for European account. which is important in connection with trade balances at a time when the Isupply of new issues is so small. BANK DIRECTORS NAMED. UPPER MARLBORO, Md., January | 10 (Special).—At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the First Na- tional Bank of Southern Maryland here ‘Tuesday it was announced that $10,000 had been carried to the surplus fund from undivided profits making the total surplus $140000 and the annual divi- dend of 20 per cent had been.declared. Trading s Light. Fresh fish were scarce in the local market this morning. Shad and herring, caught in Florida waters, probably at- tracted the attention of buyers more than other fish. Shad were fairly plenti- ful at 30 and 40 cents a pound, while herring were scarce at 10 cents. Spanish mackerel, also from Florida, »iproved a good seller at 25 cents, the King mackerel, more plentiful and not in such great demand, selling at 23 cents. Dealers had small quantities of rock- fish to offer at 30 and 40 cents a pound and fresh trout that sold at 30 cents. Frozen trout, not especially large, sold at 15 cents. Very few fish caught in the Potomac small catches of perch and catfish being about the only receipts from there. Oysters Plentiful. Oysters continued plentiful and in splendid condition, selects selling at $2.50 and standards at $2.25 a gallon. Shell stock sold around $2 a bushel Crab meat was fairly plentiful, the lump selling at 80 cents and the flake at 65 cents a pound. Lobsters were quoted at 65 cents a pound. Wet weather this morning was not conducive to heavy trading. Consum- ers have about had their fill of poultry and are buying more meats, dealers re- ported, but increased poultry business is expected in a few days. Receipts of rabbits the past few days have not been so heavy. The game is in splendid condition, dealers report, and there is a good demand for it. Best stock sold at 25 and 30 cents this morning. Prices of most commodities this morn- ing were about the same as prices quoted yesterday. Today's Wholesale Prices—Jobbers’ Prices Slightly Higher.
