Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 10.—For the most part today’s stock market was a There was some selling in midmorning, and prices weakened » |again in the last hour, but in general the list gave a good account of itself. The late reaction seemed to be due to uncertainty about what brokers’ loans would show in statement after the close and to the possibility, remote as that appeared, of some change in the rediscount rate. Motor stocks and rails were well bought all day. Among the features at the end were the St. Paul issues. United States Steel retained most of the gain it had yesterday. Call money held at 6 per cent all day. Sentiment toward the market was greatly improved, partly because of the way in which it had acted yesterday and partly because of the ecasier trend the Federal Reser\'e' | | | and Otis Elevator did the same. Wright Aeronautical was higher for a time. Copper stocks moved more irregularly. For the moment the demand for the metal is not so urgent, nor are predic- tions of an advance in the price so con- fident. General Electric was up at the starte but did not hold all the gain. Motor List. In the motor list Studebaker was still the leader. It made progress slowly but was taken in large blocks. Willys- Overland was well supported and among the accessories Stewart-Warner and Timken-Roller Bearing gained ground. ‘The rails were quiet, although Pere Marquette ran up 5 points more on top of Wednmesday's 4-point gain. St. Paul preferred above 59 was up over a point. Money renewed at 6 per cent, the lowest, renewal rate since mid-November. The tone was casier in time money but quotations were unchanged. The vol- ume in the first half hour was much above that of the corresponding period yesterday. For a time the ticker was behind the market but it had caught up by noon. Steel stocks held most of their gains of the preceding day. Western Union was prominent among the utilities with a 5 point rise. Con- gress Cigar led the tobaccos, and or- ganized buying was evidently going on.
