Willlam A!fred Merritt, U.8.N., supply officer of the Charleston, O.. Navy Yard, died -t his home at the navy yard there Wednesday night. He was 54 years old. Oapt. Merritt was widely known in this city, where he had several times been statloned. He was last on duty here a year ago as a member of the se- lection board for the promotion of of- ficers of the Supply Corps, U. S. N. He also had served in many parts of the world. He entered the Navy in 1897. Capt. Merritt was the eldest son of the late James Alfred Merritt and the late Mrs. Emma Wickes Merritt of Bal- timore. He is survived by his widow, who formerly was Miss Elise Oldham of ‘Winchester, Va.; a son, Willlam A, jr.; two brothers, Robert G.
