Liquidation for Income Tax Losses Affects Number of Securities. Argentl BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch 0 The Star. NEW YORK, December 28.—The 12 per cent renewal rate for call money today and 8% per cent 30-day loans did not have so much effect on the bond market as the liquidation that took place in a number of unfavorably situ- ated industrial and railroad bonds in order to establish income tax losses. In this group there were some strik- ingly sick Fooklng issues, when compari- son_is made_with their record earlier in the year. In most cases this reflected unfavorable earnings or & clouded pros- pect for the companies whose obligations were under pressure. Hudson Coal 5s, which were brought out in June 1927 at 987:. lost a point, selling as low as 83':. Lorillard 5':s, issued in the same month at 9715, sold at 86. The one has been as high this year as 95 and the other at 971;. Cer- tainteed Products 54s dropped a point to 81, where they compared with 961 some months ago. Consolidated Coal 5s touched 72, against 84 last Winter. Seaboard Air Line adjustments were at the new low of 37. They were 82! last February when the management of the road last authorized payment of interest on them. The effect of the stringent money conditions - on hmgw investment securities was negl! . Some of them were off fractionally while others were | D slightly higher. A block of $300,000 fourth Liberty 4%s was taken early in the day at a slight advance over yes- terday’s closing. The long-term Treas- uries this afternoon advanced from 3s_to 12 point. The . greatest activity in speculative bonds occurred in Public Service of New Jersey 415, which showed a gain of 10 points. Andes Copper 7s gained 4 points and Barnsdall 6s a point. Improvement was shown by a number of the South American issues and among Gefman, Italian and Eastern European bonds that had recently been under pressure. I Of the $20,000,000 new -bonds offered today, the greater proportion was repre: sented in a two-year public utility note on slightly better than a 6 per cent basis which indicates that such financing a8 is imperative is better ac- commodated by short than by long ma- turities.
