FRENCH LINES OPEN AIR MAIL SERVIGE Steal March on U. S. by Starting System to South American Cities. BY WILL IRWIN. By Cable 10 The Star and th North Ameri- can Newspaper Alliance. ABOARD U. 8. S. UTAH, EN ROUTE TO HAMPTON ROADS, Va., December 28—While a committee of the Pan- American Congress is struggling to ar- range a convention to pave tie way for an American airifne between the United States and the great cities of temperate South America France has stolen s march on us. This Winter France began the oper- ation of an air and water mail service between the French capital and Men- doza, in Western Argentina. This brings Paris within 10 days of Buenos Alres by mail. Starting from Paris, land planes carry sacks of mail to Toulouse, planes across the Mediterranean to North Africa and from there land planes make the next stage to the port of Dakar, in the French possession of Senegal. At Senegal there is a newly established line of fast packet boats which carry the mail to Natai. on the coast of Bl:”} k at the ook & map will show that this is the point where the land masses of the two hemispheres approach each other most closely. The distance is about 2.200 miles, 'hem New York is 3,200 miles from Cherbourg. Plan of Delivery, From Natal the line delivers and fl:::ks up mail at Rio and several other portant Brazillan towns, then passes on to Buenos Alres and Mendoza. In a short time two days will be cut off this route by the establishment of & - plane service between Dakar the Cape Verde Islands on the eastern sec- tor of the course and between Natal and Fernando Noronha Island on the ‘western. Finally, the Prench ook forward to the time when the airplane will be sufficiently stablized to make R practical o regular hop between these island groups, thus giving an all- air route between Paris ‘:nd Mendoza and cutting the time to four or five 'nu French government is subsidising this project l', the rate of $3,000,000 a year. They are it with palpable motives—political and the Interpretation of the richest South American countries. It is & species of propaganda, and it is working. Friends of ours in Buenos Afres re- mlukegmth;t whereas they used to re- ceive American newspapers and periodi- cals long before those of Europe now French publications come in far ahead of the rest. In consequence of this the first comment from outside capitals on and | world events will come from the Parisian ss and our views will be stale by the ime they reach Buenos Aires. . ‘This is only one small example of the benefltlwthnhmhoffl:ll d communication. The pity of it our point of view is that with an even break we could beat the French hands dnwnbyllndiuthew route is from Havana, Panama, Los Andes, Mendoza and ioza—the passage of the flfh and too full of air pockets to per- t sure and safe flying, That would lnvolve night flying, but even that, the xperts say, hpeflecflymul llme :t.tenuon paid to Propaganda Purposes. !uhddlu for -propaganda. purposcs our America foreign MM& - aviation men in South America g:lhvc that with gl lflm‘l contract terms planes ‘The latest report mans are now conf tha now mm ot e e T e {mportant cities of South America the United States.
