By the Associated Press. Use of radio and sound transmission through sea water is revolutionizing the methods of hydrographic surveying and increasing the safety of mariners, E. Lester Jones, chief of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, de- clares. In his annual report Mr. Jones says that the method known as radio acous- tic sound ranging has reached a stage of dependability and accuracy which, while not guaranteeing perfect perform- ance under all conditions, warrants official indorsement. Accomplishments Doubled. It has more than doubled the ac- complishments of ocean surveying par- ties In regions of prevalent adverse weather conditions, as it permits the making of surveys during foggy or rainy weather and during the hours of dark- ness, he says. The sound of a bomb as the survey ship travels through the water is re- corded by two or more shore stations which automatically send wireless sig- nals to the ship as soon as the sound arrives. This is a measurement of the distance of the ship from each station. Knowing the location of the shore sta- tions by previous surveying, the three sides of a triangle are known, from which the ship's position can be com- puted. On the ship is a timing device, a chronograph, comprised of a strip of paper like a stock ticker tape on which two lines are drawn by pens that may be deflected by magnets. The first of these pens is operated by a chronometer so that it makes a kink in its line each second, and the tape is drawn at such a rate that the distance between sec- onds is about one inch. The second pen may be connected either to a sound receiver or a wireless receiver. Sound Signal Amplified. ‘The shore stations are equipped with a complete wireless transmitter and re- céiver, and a sound receiver is placed out in the water from a few hundred feet to a mile from shore, depending upon the depth of water and severity of the surf. A cable connects the re- ceiver to the shore apparatus where the weak sound signal is amplified sufficiently to operate a relay and send a radio signal to the ship. N.W, Wet Towel “Invented” By Lauder as Radio Improvement Works LONDON (#). — Sir Harry Lauder has “invented” a device to improve the broadcasting of the volce. 1t involves nothing more costly than a towel soaked in water. The towel is placed over the microphone and has the effect of emphasizing the singer’s voice and at the same time subduing the sound of the orchestra. British Broadcasting Co. offi- clals were a little skeptical when Sir Harry insisted on having a wet towel before he would face the microphone. Such a request had never been made in the studio before. But when the ex- pert in the listening cabinet sig- naled that it was yielding excel- lent results astonishment turned to delight and Sir Harry beamed a canny “I told you so” out of the corner of his eye. RADIO EXPORTS SHOW INCREASE THIS YEAR Receivers and Receiver Compo- nents Are Items Revealing Largest Gain. In 1928 exports of radio apparatus for the first nine months of the year and for the single month of Septem- ber show an increase over similar pe- riods in 1927. The increase for Sep- tember amounted to $359,374. The individual items making the biggest gains were receivers, increased by $246,714, and receiver components, by $11%,529. Receiver accessories in- creased slightly but exports of tubes decreased. Canada is the most important market for radio apparatus, shipment of re- celvers to that country during Septem- ber amounting to $362,613, receiver components $168,000 and receiver ac- cessories $155,000. Argentina contin- ues to offer a good market for both re- ceivers and components, shipments amounting to $33,591 and $57,499, re- spectively, during September.
