THE ,SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, DECEMBER 2, 1928_PART 1. LA CONFESSN N LOVEBURNIG Chicago Report Says Man Held in Texas Admits Help- ing Woman “Purify” Self. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 1.—The Chi- cago Daily Journal today published a purported confession of James Kelley, prisoner in a San Antonio hospital, that he helped Elfrieda Knaak burn herself in the furnace of the Lake Bluff Police Station last month to purify herself for love of a married man. Kelley was captured in the Texas city as a suspected Army deserter, and dispatches have said he admitted aid- ing the psychology student and book agent thrust her limbs into the flames antil she became unconscious. “I tried to get her to quit,” the Jour- nal quoted Kelley, “but I did help her. T tried to put her into the furnace, but the door was too small.” It was for love of Charles W. Hitchcock, a mar- ried man and night policeman at Lake Bluff, that the girl braved the flames, Kelley said, confirming Miss Knaak’ Xmas Gift ldeas Handkerchiefs Bags Silk Underwear Hosiery, Negligees k| City. GIVING! own story told before she died. Kelley said he met her at a station in High- land Park, and accompanied her to the Lake Bluff Police Station. There, the Journal said, Kelley and Miss Knaak turned their talk to religion. The newspaper report gave Kelley's story of how the woman burned herself with his assistance. Advised by Gen. A. J. Bowley at Fort Sam Houston that the man had made a_confession, Chief of Police Lester Tiffany of Lake Forest, left tonight for San Antonio to investigate the suspect. Kelley was said to have admitted slug- ging anothey young woman at Lake Forest, and claimed he had been a chauffer for several prominent North Shore families, including Maj, Fred- erick McLaughlin, husband of Irene Castle, Willlam Wrigley and J. B. Her- rick. “His true name is believed to be Ezra McNeigh. SEIPEL ESCAPES ATTACK. VIENNA, December 1 (#).—Chan- cellor Seipel narrowly escaped being the victim of a brutal assault this morning. He had just left a private reception room in Parliament when an unem- ployed chauffeur made his way below the chancellor’s room windows and be- gan to demolish them. He accompa- | nied his vandalism with fierce oaths and threats. He smashed eight beveled glass windows extending from the floor to the celling with heavy missiles which he had carried in his pocket. Most of the objects in the reception oom were damaged. The man was arrested. 3,100 AUTOISTS GET LICENSES FIRST DAY Sale by District Officials Is to Be Continued Tomorrow With Increased Force. The first day of the sale of 1929 | automobile license plates yesterday re- | sulted in disposal of 3,100, according | to District Superintendent of Licenses | Wade H. Coombs. Tag sale started at 8:30 am. and continued until 3 pm. It will be re- sumed at 9 am. tomorrow and will continue until 4:30 p.m. daily there- after, cxcept Saturdays when the hours are 9 am. to 3 p.m. Mr. Coombs said that things worked more smoothly yesterday than on any opening day of tag sales he can re- member. One great cause of delay on the part of some motorists was that they forgot to bring their last year's registration cards and had to wait while their statements as to car owner- ship and descriptions were checked. Nine extra temporary workers were on hand to help the regular force in the distribution of the tags. The new tags may be placed on automobiles December 15, and they must be in place by midnight of De- cember 31, Mr. Coombs said. Mr. Coombs said his office was equipped to | distribute 6,000 tags da: literally means Jiu-Jitsu “muscle | breaking.” Breslau’s PRICE THAN THEY WOULD ORDINARILY BE IN JANUARY.
