THIRD WITCH DEATH CHARG S PROBED York Police Devote Hours to Questioning Voodooist on Fate of Girl. By the Associated Press. YORK, Pa., December 1.—With two slay in York County within recent years definitely attributed to witchcraft, authorities today bent their efforts to- ward linking the death of a third prob- able victim, a 16-year-old girl, to the weird practices of the cult. A voodoo “doctor,” John Blymyer, reputed leader of the trio which clubbed to death and burned Nelson D. Reh- meyer, the latest victim, in a farmhouse near here Tuesday night, was ques- ned by police for hours today in con- tion with the death more than a vear ago of the girl, Gertrude Rudy of this city. Search for Motive. { Her body was found hacked to pieces along the railroad tracks near the city. She had been shot first and then her body was cut up, the police said. No motive ever was established for the crime, but witchcraft was suspected, and t was learned that she had tried the “pow wow” treatment. After several hours of questioning. He was a neighbor and had also worked in the same factory with her, it was learned, too, but he denied having “pow wowed” for the girl and said he knew nothing about her | death. Meanwhile Blymer intimated that he had no regrets for the death of Reh- | meyer. At the county jail today he said: “Rehmeyer is dead. I no longer feel bewitched. Now I can eat and sleep.” Only One Sorry. John Curry, 15, who was arrested with Blymer, shared that feeling, and of the trio, all of whom have confessed to the Rehmeyer slaying, only Wilbert C. Hess appeared Sorry. District Attorney Herrmann said he would investigate the practice of witch- |craft in the county. A search of Bly- mer’s room revealed that he conducted an _extensive “practice” in voodooism. It developed that Blymer was at ong | time a patient at the Harrisburg State Hospital for the Insane and was dis- | charged as cured, that the three slay- |ers took $3 from their victim's pockets |and divided it among themselves, and |that Blymer himself took treatment | from other voodoo doctors. — g ‘ Gun-Toting Puritans, | The early Puritans always went | armed to meeting, although to justify and perhaps sanctify the Sunday “gun- | toting” they were forbidden to fire at anything save their two “greatest in- | conveniences”—Indians and wolves! & R | Considering all obstacles, an enor- | mous amount of money and care is spent on education in South America. what they are in closet, ex- and Chair, finest $369.00 Six-piece genuine walnut with other dresser, genuine large vanity and foot bed. chair and cluded Suite, bench $139 Overstuffed Room Suite, Upholstered in Bakers cut velour t and finest Covering of finest ported patterned quards and damask binations THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €, DECEMBER 9 1928—PART T.' Soapy was the boss of Skagway and also ils mayor. One day it was learned that a par- ticularly flagrant robbery had been per- petrated or instigated by the mayor. ' ‘This proved to be the ‘“one drop too many” for Soapy Smith. A group of 'indignzmt citizens assembled with the | ! murderous determination to “get | Soapy.” Word was received to this ef- fect by the mayor himself. Soapy was | nothing, if not a brave man. Instead of running away he approached the menacing crowd, a pistol in a holster under his armpit and a rifle in his hand. A man named Reed, a United States marshal or deputy, jammed his gun in Soapy’s chest. “Don't shoot!” cried Soapy. As he spoke the hammer of the pistol fell and discharged a bullet that went through Smith's heart. But not before Soapy had emptied a shell from his rifie into Reed’s abdomen. Smith fell dead. Reed staggered back and sank to the ground gasping. He was car- ried away and died a little later. Thus ended one of the most pictur- esquely villainous characters known to | American pioneers. It would be diffi-| cult to recognize in the peaceful, law- | abiding town of the Skagway of 1928 the turbulent, riotous “gold rush” set- tlement of 30 years ago.
