A.” With Norma Noel Se: M The separation of hospitalization from the public school system and the creation of a sanitarium for tubercular children in Washington were urged last night by Dr. William Fowler, District health officer, in an address to the District School Association, meeting in the board room of the District Building. The existing tuberculosis school in the city provides solely for the segrega- tion of infected children who are not suffering from an advanced stage of the disease, he said, and is not in any. sense @ curative institution. Many children, he said, stay there for eight hours of the day and then go home where they exhaust themselves or meet with improper living conditions, thus nullifying_any benefits derived at the school. Dr. Fowler also pointed out that there is no adequate facility for treating tubercular children under school age. § A properly equipped sanitarium, he believes, would meet all these demands and would, in addition, relieve the pub- lic school system of the burden of car- ing for tubercular children. Dr. Fowler outlined the work being done by his department in lowering the death rate among infant children and in the treatment of school children suffering from minor ailments. Dr. Fowler admitted that this work is not being adequately performed, but assert- ed his personnel will have to be at Jeast doubled before the 72,000 chil- | dren of school age can receive proper care in this respect.
