BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN, Special Dispatch 1o The Near: NEW YORK, November .8.—Appar- ently unlimited buying power with speculative enthusiasm keyed to a high pitch resulted in another session of pronounced activity and strength on the curb exchange today. Prices were bid up sharply with dn uttér’ disregard to ylelds and current' dividend' rates. | Many of the favorites went- to their highest prices on record -with. previous buyers showing little or no dispostion to take down profits already accrued. Olls, utilities, motors, mining issues and a host of specialty favorites shared in the upturn. In the case of the first named group the demand was influenced by the steady change for the better in the industry, prospects of favorable dividend action by companies credited with large cash surpluses and the out- look for increased earnings in the com- ing months. Standard of Kentucky, Ohio and Vacuum went forwsrd into new high ground while Cities Service common, Ryan Consolidated and Barns- dall warrants reached their best among the independents. Power companies and shares of stocks representing holding companies were favorites among the utilities. Electrification programs of the various rallroads through which these organizations stand to benefit materially provided an incentive for operations for the rise while at the same time many were inclined to attribute their strength to the political developments. American Superpower issues responded to the favorable dividend action taken by directors, American Light & Traction moved upward several points, while m)r‘:henstem Power at 43 reached a new igh. Stutz Motor. Henney Motor and Mar- mon came in for attention in their group, with the first named two at fresh highs for the year. Their strength was part of the general upward move- ment in motor shares on the Stock Ex- change. Attention was attracted to the mar- ket for both Anchor Cap and Anchor Post Fence. The former went to a new high for the year, while the latter was in demand around 37. Although there was apparently no connection between the two stocks the latter was influenced by the rumors that it was soon to go on a regular annual $3 dividend basis with the. possibility of an extra being declared in stock. Earnings for 1928 :vhere estimated at the rate of $6 a are. New high records were too numerous for. explanation, but they included a rise of more than 9 points in Neisner Brothers, a further upturn in Rainbow Luminous, which has been among the favorites recently, a gain of 5 points in the new Safeway Stores, a several point rise in the comparatively new Keystone :{‘l;flll:]n and a like gain in Newmont PEOPLES DRUG SALES UP. October and Ten-Month Returns Show Large Increases. Sales of Peoples Drug Stores, Inc., Teported today, totaled $974,626 in Oc- tober, compared with $731,436 in the same month last year, a gain of $243,190, or 33 per cent. (Lt . Sales for the past 10 months reached $8,991,031, in comparidon with $6,499,576 in the first 10 months of 1927, a gain this year of $2,491,455, or 38.3 per cent. Washinaon Stock Exchange SALES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 8 —The most interesting incidents in today's bond market were the further rise of 4 points in Andes Copper convertible 7s and the immediate sale and listing of the $50,000,000 issue of Penns&vlnh Co. 4% per cent secured gold bonds. . The Andes convertibles followed ‘,‘E yesterday’s rise of over 10 points wi an opening gain of 3 points and a sub- sequent advance of 1'4 points, which carried them above 170. The stock into which they are convertible was an active feature in the speculatve market, Selling at the highest price since it was offered last month. In contrast with this movement was the decline of 3% points in Anaconda Copper convertibl 7s, which had risen yesterday from 14 to 158. This was due to profit-taking in Anaconda stock, which automatically affected the price of the bonds. There were two significant elements in the Pennsylvania financing. One was the size of the issue, which indicated that bankers are no loj timid about nger 3, | bringing out large blocks of h-grade securities, and the other the price of 99, at_which the bonds were offered. This was considered to be somewhat under the market for bonds of this character and rate. That this was the interpretation of the street was indi- cated in the avidity with which the bonds were absorbed. They sold at a small premium after being listed. They had the effect of dépressing quotations of some of the 4!, per cent issues that have been selling in the neighborhood of 99, notably Union Pacific 4lzs. ‘There was also evidence of some switch- ing out of old bonds into the new Pennsylvania 4%s for the higher return T 5552 eoeseStooe 838! F and for the anticipated appreciation. Other issues advertised today brought the total up to above $65,000,000. Again the ofl group was strong. The important members of it showing Jlln! of 1!, to 2%, points were Barnsdall 6s, Simms 6s and White Eagle 5158, In- ternational Paper 6s was heavy under 99. There was a fair sized turnover in Dodge 6s at 103}3, a raise of % in Hud- son Coal 5s, a point advance in Denver 58 of 1955 and fractional gains in New Haven, Frisco, Wabash and Rock Island wi. 1Narrag Co 55 A 1002 1 8 Nathan Strauss 6s wi 124%, 12 P&L6s A 106 1 106 159% F13Y e 94T 105% 102% 108 100 98, [ 10! 1% 101% 102 102's 92 92% 4 96% SatsonenamasnsSwosumanmnom.mSSo £ scada i 911 9715 e 105341053 4 1091000 00t ' 100% £33 g5 .. WHEAT IS LOWER ON INITIAL SALES Chicago Market Reacts on Reports of Drop in Liverpool Prices. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, November 8.—Sympathiz- ing with more of a down turn in Liver- pool quotations mnndeépected.l valufit averaged lower today during early deal- ings here. Declines were assoclated with favorable crop prospects for new Southern Hemisphere wheat and to con- tinued large offerings of old crop wheat from Argentina. Opening % to % off, Chicago wheat later held near. to initial figures. Corn and oats were relatively firm, corn starting at ¥ to %% sethack, but afterward scoring gains. Provisions inclined downward. With Argentina reported today as of~ fering old wheat for November ship- ment at a discount under the new crop, Indicating that old crop supplies in Ar- gentina are still abundant, wheat trad- ers here were also confronted with reports of auspicious weather for the Argentine wheat harvest. Spread- ing operations here, in which wheat was sold and corn bought, tended likewise 1% | to depress wheat values. i lz%‘lll: <act'flll $ias t(fl n 15, 76 Russ Gov 8%as cfs n 14% n—New ww—With warrants. Ar- \rivals of corn in Chieago today amount- ed to but 164 cars, against 348 cars a week ago. Kansas City, St. Louls and Omaha receipts were also meager. Furthermore, advices were at hand that United States corn is underselling Ar- gentine corn in Europe by as much as 9 cents a bushel. COTTON IS STEADY IN EARLY DEALINGS Market Registers Advance of Five Points to Decline of One. BY the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, November 8.—The cot- ton market opened steady at an advance of 5 points to a decline of 1 point. There was some buying on stes Liverpool cables and reports of further rains in the belt, but 1t was supplied by South- ern selling and liquidation. Trading was fairly active preceding ‘the Govern- ment report, with much of it attributed to further evening-up of outstanding accounts, and with orders well enough divided to cause rather narrow and ir- regular fluctuations. After selling off to 18.80 December rallled to 18.84, while March worked up from 18.70 to 18.75, but the improvement was . not maintained and the market. was within a point or two of the lowest at the end of the first half hour. . The market was quite active toward the middle of the morning, with prices advancing on covering and trade b and with the active months showing net gains of about 18 to 20 points “before business was suspended to receive the Government report. The latter, placing the indicated yleld at 14,133,000 bales and the ginnings prior to November 1 at 10,160,997 bales, was not far out: of line with expectations, but if anything was a shade lower than looked for, and when business was resumed December sold up to 18.27 and May to 18.92, or 25 to 44 points net higher. This advance was checked by izing, and the vol- ume of business tapered off somewhat with the market holding about steady at reactions of 3 or 4 points from the best around midday. Packard Extra Dividend DETROIT, November 8 (#).—The board of directors of the Packard Motor Co. today declared an extra cash divi- dend of 5 per cent. And type-metal is an alloy of which three-quarters are lead. The sheaths of great cables are of lead. Huge vats where sulphuric acid is made are lined with lead, because of its slow reaction to the powerful acid. Those who work with radio- active elements and X-rays wear aprons impregnated with lead for protection. Lead compounds are the pigments of several paints. Of course, you have heard of red lead and white lead. Lead is used for solder and for plumbing pipe. And it has a wide use in external applications in medicine. Internally. any considerable quantity of lead r--: result in lead poisoning. As lead is not safe in every form, so investments are likewise not safe in every form. That is why more inves- tors are turning every day to the First Mortgage Notes issued by Swartzell, Rheem & Hensey Co. for they recognize that this form of investment IS safe— and that their savings in these notes will be kept intact, as well as pay them a steady 6% return. If they are safe for others, they are safe for you. SWARTZELL, RHEEM & HENSEY CO. MORTGAGE BANKERS 7A7 15 STREET N.W. / WASHINGTON D.C.
