AVIATOR PLANNING COLOVBAN FLEHT Lieut. Benjamin Mendez Here After Two Years’ Train- ing as Flyer. Preparations for a flight from New York to Bogota, Colombia, next week, are being made here today by Lieut. Benjamin Mendez of the Colombian army, who has just completed two years of aviation training in various Army and Navy fiying schools in this country. Lieut. Mendez landed at the Naval Air Station, Anacostia, just before dusk vesterday, after a flight from the naval station at Far Rockaway, Long Island; in the Curtiss Falcon seaplane, which he will use on his Colombian flight. He will remain in this city until Monday, when he will leave for New York to be- gin_his flight to South America. Lieut. Mendez was met at the Naval Air Station by Dr. Enrique Olaya, Co- Jombian Minister, and Federal aviation officials. - He left his plane at the sta- tion and then went to Bolling Field, where he was given quarters as the guest of Maj. Howard C. Davidson, field commandant. Will Meet President. Today Lieut. Mendez paid a number of informal visits to friends in the War and Navy Departments, discussing with them plans for his coming flight and ob- taining data as to routes, landing places, refueling points and weather conditions. Accompanied by Dr. Olaya, Lieut. Mendez will call at the White House at 12:15 pm. tomorrow to be received by the President. Tomorrow afternoon he will visit Arlington National Cemetery to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in behalf of the Co- Jombian army. On Saturday the Colombian fiyer will christen his new plane, which is the first of its type. The plane, which will be named the Ricaurde, was construct- ed especially for him. The Curtiss Falcon is a standard type in use by the United States Army, but never before has been equipped as a seaplane. Lieut. Mendez said today that he is highly pleased with its performance. Girl to Christen Plane. ‘The christening will take place-at the Naval Air Station at 11 a.m. Saturday. Senorita Maria Olaya, one of the daugh- ters of the Colombian Minister, will name the plane. . Lieut. Mendez came to this country two years ago under auspices of the State and War Departments. He train- ed with the Army at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Tex. He then went over to the Navy and trained at Hampton ?nads, Va., on all of the standard Navy ypes. CONFERENCE IS PLANNED. General principles and outstanding tendencies g the deveégfiment of pa- rental education and d study . will be discussed at the conference, and the ‘worl programs of State, university and volunteer organizations engaged in that work will be presented by their own -staff members. New Air Passenger Line. BORDEAUX.—The first flights: with passengers have been inaugurated by a new airplane service from Bordeaux to Geneva and return. MEXICO CITY (#).—A woman is no longer subject to arrest if she happens to be alone upon a Mexico City street after nightfall. The new chief of po- lice, Gen. Antonio Rios Zertuche, abol- ished a regulation, previously prevail- ing, that any unescorted female abroad at_night might be arrested. He said the law was possible of grave abuse and was an unwarranted inter- ference with personal liberty. It had been intended to prevent women of the underworld walking the streets. It sometimes caused serious embarrass- ment to other women. Meteorite Causes Worship. ‘That the fall of the meteorite near the village of Kanth, India, which kill- ed two men and injured a third, is a sign of divine wrath, is believed by natives of that country. As a result many devotional ceremonies are being held. The meteor is reported to have made a hole in the ground 10 feet in diameter and 20 feet deep. The sound of the fall was heard for 20 miles.
