Br the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 3.—Heavy pre-election profit taking sales turned the course of stock prices irregular to- day after an opening interval of strength. Trading was relatively quiet, indicating the temporary withdrawal of many large traders from the market. Several soft spots cropped out through- out the list, but there was no evidence of any concerted “bear” selling. Leading - commission houses ' empha- sized caution in-view of the record- breaking loan totals. While some ob- servers attributed the large gains in loans to the unusually large volume of new financing in recent weeks, others saw evidence of widespread distribution of stocks. Week end trade reviews generally were favorable. Steel output continues at a high rate and the seasonal recession in automo- hile_production and sales has been less marked than usual. The demand for copper continues unusually heavy and further improvement is noted in the oil trade. Public utility shares attracted a large following in today’s market. American power and light ran up more than 3 points and gains of a point or more were recorded by Commonwealth Power, Waterworks Electric Power and Elec- tric Light and Southern California Edison. Radio lost an early gain of 2 points and Barnet Leather converted an early advance of 3 points into a loss of simi- lar extent. Montgomery-Ward sold off 5 points, Abitibi Power preferred and G‘?dydelsr E each. ard Baking preferred dipped 2 points to a new low at 81%; suchpencerx\’g fa- vorites as United States Steel common, Hudson Motors, American Telephone and Union Pacific also dropped a point or_more. Buffalo and Susquehanna added near- 1y 5 points to its 4-point gain of yes- terday by touching a new top at 543;. The Japan Trading Co. reduced Jast month's estimate 27,000 beles to 13,789,200, the second private estimate pointing to a reduction rather than an increase in the yield.
