62 JURY SOON TO PICK MEMORIAL DESIGN Five Authors Submit Models for Completion of Unknown Soldier’s Tomb. All the necessary preliminaries hav- ing been complied with by the authors of the best five designs for the comple- tion of the Tomb of the Unknown Sol- dier, in the Arlington National Ceme- tery, the jury of award will assemble in this city within the next few weeks and make selection of the design regarded as best adapted for the purpose. ‘The time for the submission of the models of the five successful designs ex- pired yesterday and they are now at the quartermaster general’s office ready for inspection and study by the members of the jury and others directly concerned in the final selection. The jury of award consists of Charles A. Coolidge, Boston; Paul P. Crets, Phil- adelphia, and D. H. Burnham, Chicago, representing the American Institute of Architects; Mrs. William D. Rock, Phil- adelphia, representing the Gold Star Mothers, and Col. Hanford MacNider, Mason City, Iowa, representing the American Legion. By the act of July 3, 1926, the author- ized total cost of memorial and the de- signs is limited to $50,000, and it is now estimated that $44,000 of that sum will be available for the actual fabrication and erection of the memorial. Of the five designs from which the final selection will be made, one was submitted by Horace W. Peaslee, archi- ; Carl Mose, sculptor, and Charles , 2d. landscape architect, all of this y. The four other tentative designs vere submitted, respectively, by Schwein- furth, Ripley & Le Boutillier of Boston; Thomas Hudson Jones, sculptor, and Lorimer Rich, architect, of New York City; Harry Stemfold, architect, Boris Riabeff, associate, and Gaetana Cecere, sculptor, of Philadelphia; James Earl Fraser, sculptor, and Egerton Swart- wout, architect, of New York City. Under the terms of the competition the authors of the five successful de- signs were required to restudy their original designs and submit models of white plaster of Paris, showing the me- morial in complete detail, and $500 will be paid for each of these designs. From the five, the jury of award will select the best and most suitable design for the completion of the tomb, and its authors will be awarded the contract for the work. After any necessary re- visions to meet the views of the Arling- ton Cemetery Commission, the Axger- ican Battle Monuments Commission, the Fine Arts Commission and the Secre- tary of War, the judgment of the jury of awards will be considered final. All the Renault tanks, of French manufacture, brought to the United | States by the troops to whom they were issued during the operations in France in the World War, will soon disappear from the United States Army. They were declared obsolete in 1925, but were continued in reserve until recently, when it was finally decided to salvage them. About 90 of these tanks were in reserve at Fort Leonard Wood, Md. A number of them were used as targets in tank and anti-tank fire tests, and some will be kept there for similar use in the future. Under plans just approved by the War Department, 45 of the remain- | ing tanks will be removed at once to the | proving ground at Aberdeen, Md., where | they will be broken up and the armored | parts used in the development of anti- tank weapons. Six other tanks will be sent to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., for experimental pur- “Our Friday Specials” Red Snappers. .. .25¢ Ib. Mulletts ........20clb.
