FINANCIATL. CURB PRICES RISE IN HEAVY BUYING Market Generally Higher as Traders Pile Up Orders for Favorites. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 1—If the election influence was a factor in specu- lative calculations today, it had the effect of bringing in enormous buying orders in the curb market favorites. ‘Those who had previously been dis- posed to even up accounts over elec- tion day hurried to get back their com- mitments, with the result that prices were bid up sharply. Expectations of a decrease in the brokers’ loans statement and belief that a good-sized short interest had been built up as a result of the recent selling were additional influences making for higher prices. Practically every group Was repre- sented in the improvement. Among the outstanding features which attracted most_attention were St. Regis Paper, Rainbow Luminous Products, Marmon Motor, Newmont Mining and United Gas & Improvement. The spectacular advance to a new high in the first named issue was the most noteworthy because of the recent pressure exerted against the market for related issues during the past week on the Stock Ex: change. The common conclusion drawn from the action of the stock was that it was the result of a technical corner. Awarding of two important patents to the Rainbow Luminous Co. by the United States Patent Office was the incentive back of the demand for that stock, which carried it from the pre- vious final of 42 to a new high around 45. United Gas & Improvement was influenced as were many other power properties by the announcement of the electrification plans of the Pennsylvania Railroad and what this is to mean to the power companies. Around 148 it compared with the previous final of 14134, Northeastern Power was an- other favorite, up several points to a new top. “Capitalization of cash surpluses,” was the cry which accompanied demand for the Standard Oils. Action along this line was taken today by the Illinois Pipe Line directors. It took the form of a declaration of a semi-annual dividend of $10, thereby placing the stock on an annual $20 dividend basis, against $12 previcusly paid. The market for Illinois Pipe Line swept forward for a gain of almost 20 points when it changed hands at prac- tically its highest around 245. Standard of Kentucky felt the effect of profit- taking for a time, but rallied later. In- terpational Petroleum went to a new top round 49 and Vacuum was a point or so_higher, New high records were marked up in Marmon Motors, Propper Silk Hosiery 2nd National Sugar of New Jersey, the last named up over 7 points. Newmont Mining featured its group and at one time was up over 5 points, discounting the price appreciation in the market for securties held in the com- pany’s treasury. New Grocery Stores Venture. NEW YORK, November 1 (#).—Clar- ence Saunders of Memphis, Tenn., founder of the Piggly Wiggly chain of groceries, has launched a new ven- ture with the formation of the Clar- ence Saunders Stores, Inc. The com- pany will begin operations with 51 self- service grocery stores, add 100 more within the next few months. o Washmgton Stock Exchange SALES. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 1.—Again to- day there was a surprising display of strength in low coupon bonds, in spite of the fact that money rates began the month at a high level. At the same time the speculative issues revived un- der the influence of a broader and stronger market for stocks. There has been a gradual creeping up in prices for the first mentioned group, until some of them were today at the best figures in six months. Con- spicuous in this list for strength were Frisco prior lien 4s, which sold at a parity with the 41>s; Baitimore & Ohio first 4s, Northern Pacific first 4s, Union Pacific new 4s, up nearly a point, and the 415 per cent issues of the Wabast Rock Island, New Haven, St. Paul, Fi co, Missouri-Kansas-Texas and Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh. The copper convertibles were helped by the Pennsylvania electrification an- nouncement. This also brought about a revival of speculation in Public Serv- ice. of New Jersey convertible 415s, with a maximum gain in them of 5 points. Anaconda 7s advanced 3% points and | Andes 7s 2 points. Both of the Barns- dall issues were buoyant. The convert- ible 6s advanced points. and the bonds without warrants, on an even larger turnover, were up 214 points. Sinclair issues were fractionally higher. International Paper 6s declined to par in sympathy with the weakness in the company's stocks. They sold at one time this year above 105. Foreign convertible bonds were quiet but strong. ‘The Fiat 7s gained a point, but the non-convertible bonds were off still fur- thar and about 5 points under their re- cent price, In the day's financing was one small issue by one of the political divisions of Colombia. Other important offerings were those of airplane stocks and investment trusts. The total issues of bords in October was approximately $300,000, with an even larger volume o! stocks. Bond dealers report an excellent de- mand for all of the new issues and maintain that they are not able to gu, enough in the way of new securities to satisfy their customers. The Federal Land Bank offering of $15,000,000 414 per cent bonds had practically been cov- ered before the subscription books opened. On account of the high rates of money, dealers are not, however, accumulating bonds to any extent, for while they are bullish on the outlook they are not willing to stand the present high carrying charges on the type of bonds for which there is now and likely | to be later the best demand. i CORN PRICES GAIN IN EARLY TRADING Market Advances After Higher Opening—Wheat and Oats Firmer. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, November 1.—Corn prices displayed strength early today in the | face of unofficial crop reports showing available supplies 70,000,000 bushels larger than last season. A leading ex- pert, however, figured the yield per acre as cre-half bushel less. Gpening 1 to 3; higher, the corn market afterward scored decided addi- tional gains. Wheat and oats were also firmer, wheat starting '3 to % up and | then reacting somewhat, but later out- | doing initial gains. Provisions went lower. According to monthly private crop | reporis fssued today the average esti- mate of the corn crop and carryover. plus the visible supply, makes the total | available supply of corn for the 1928-9 | season 2,978,000,000 bushels, com- pared with 2.908,000,000 bushels = the previous season. The average of the unofficial corn crop estimaies _today was 2,912,000,000 bushels, and of farm reserves was 64,000,000 bushels, against | an average production estimate of 2,- /969,000,000 bushels last month. Corn traders construed today's crop cstimetes es bullish, inasmuch as al- | though larger than at this time last season, the probable yield is 57,000,000 | bushels under last month’s figures. In this connection it was emphasized that the estimate of yield per acre is ap- proximately one-half bushel less than was indicated on October 1, a circum- | fact that cars are a trifie smaller than expected and | because of severe dry conditions at a | | the Missourt River. | French 7s. | Getman EI P 6%8. FRANKLIN 3900 ting Capital Funds over e ‘flg.oé’o.ooo Tle STORY OF THE METALS Iron RON was probably discovered long ago when stones containing it were heated by accident in the camp fire of a prehistoric tribe, leaving a metallic substance that made goecd arrowheads and spearheads. Its importance to human life is only realized when we consider that today it is one of the main ingredients of the blood; that every rouge compact used by the feminine sex of today is nothing but iron rust—specially prepared; that it is a part of every blue print. We are accustomed to think of it, alloyed with carbon, to make the steel of our rail- roads and bridges, and the framework and backbone of our modern buildings. So it is the custom among experi- enced investors to think of the First Mortgage Notes issued by Swartzell, Rheem & Hensey Co. as the backbone of their savings. No matter what may be among the papers in your strong box, there should be a foundation of these notes, for they are the one safe, steady and invariable security you can depend upon. Their value is always par, the income from them is a steady 6% and the result of owning them is a peace of mind worth knowing. SWARTZELL, RHEFM & HENSEY CO.
