CHAPLANS HONE UNKNOWN SOLDER Clergymen to Repeat Parts of Committal Service Armistice Day. Service chaplains who participated in the solemn dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, November 11, 1921, all veterans of the World War, will make another pilgrimage to the shrine in Arlington National Cemetery on Armistice day. On each anniversary two or more of these well known ecclesi- sstics have assembled at the tomb to repeat parts of the committal service as used by them at the burial and place & wreath at the grave. This Armistice day they will be ac- companied by Staff Sergt. Frank Witchey, who sounded “Taps” at the funeral and who will repeat the sol- dier’s requiem at the close of the brief exercises conducted by. the chaplains. ‘The chaplains who participated in the burial of the Unknown Soldier are: Col. John T. Axton, then chief of Army chaplains, now chaplain of Rutgers University; Rabbi Morris S. Lazaron, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, chap- lain Officers’ Reserve Corps; Right Rev. Charles H. Brent, Bishop of Western New York, senior chaplain, A. E. F., and Capt. John B. Frazier, U. S. N., retired, director of chaplains’ affairs in the Navy. A group of Washington clergy. mostly members of the general committee on Army and Navy chaplains and chaplains of the Regular Army and Reserve Corps, will assist in the ceremony, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Following these services at the tomb a wreath |2 will be placed on the chaplains’ cenotaph nearby in honor of the 23 chaplains who gave their lives during the World War. To Usher In Rhine Grape-Picking Season By the Associated Press. RUEDESHEIM - ON - RHINE, Ger- many, November 1.—Ancient bells tolled at 8 o'clock this morning in dozens of thousand-year-old villages along the Rhine to announce the beginning of the grape-picking season. Thousands of men and women. whose Ilatners and forefathers for centuries have been identified in some form or other with viniculture. marched out into the cele- brated “winebergs,” or vineyards, to pick a crop which is generally believed to be the best since the record years of 1915 and 1921. At 5 o'clock in the afternoon, the same quaint bells which have been rung at baptisms and funerals, on the occa- sions of national victories and local visitations by fire and flood, again ring to give notice to the grape pickers that they must forthwith leave the vine- yards. ‘The practice of tolling the hour for entry to and departure from the vine- yards is a time-honored one, established to prevent the stealing of the precious grapes intended for wine-making. For several months before picking time, while the grapes ripen slowly in the au- tumnal sunshine, all vineyards are closed by the country constabulary. Not even the owners may enter except on special permit. Distributed all along the hillsides are rural police who watch with eagles’ "eyes, and immediately question every intruder. The ringing of the bells today does not mean that all wine growers are having their vineyards picked forth- with. The riper the grape, the better is the “body” and the greater the sweet- ness of the wine likely to be. Cultivators of select brands, therefore, often risk the possibility of frost in the hope that a few days hence the grapes may be still sweeter and better. Two or three days, they said, make all the difference in the world. SNUFF PRODUCTION GAINS Increases From 4,000,000 to 41,- 000,000 Pounds in 50 Years. By the Associated Press. ‘The production of snuff in the United States in the last 50 years has increased from approximately 4,000,000 pounds per year to more than 41,000,000 pounds. The Department of Agriculture, in announcing the large increase, esti- mated that one-tenth of the population of the country either “dipped” or “sniffed.” Snuff was first introduced in Europe in the middle of the sixteenth century. Physicians of that day praised its me- dicinal virtues “for sneezing, consuming REPAIR PARTS For Furnaces and Hot-Water Boilers FRIES, BEALL & SHARP 734 10th St. N.W.
