THE EVENING 1928. “SPIRITLOVE" GRL STANDSBY STORY Death Near, Psychology Stu- dent Insists She Burned Self in Furnace. By the Associated Press. LAKE BLUFF, Ill, November 1— They gave Miss Elfrieda Knaak her last chance today to change her story of self-immolation: of burning herself— | \r, feet. arms and head, to prove her faith in the weird “spirit love” she has per- sistently professed. And she would not change it. It was the pretty book agent-psychol- ogy student’s last chance, because doc- tors said her death was a matter of hour only, and Sheriff Lawrence Doo- little and George Hargrave, private de- tective, said it was vital to their inves- tigation that they have from the dying woman's own lips a more believabie story of what happened Monday nignt in the furnace room of the Lake Bluff police station. By words and signs these two men questioned her. She was near death. | they told her. A new, a final stafe- ment was asked. Unless she added some new word, the investigation must ead no nearer solution of the peculiar affair than when it started. Holds Story True Account. Miss Knaak, facing death, told them that her previously repeated story was a true account of what happened: That she had gone alone to the police station Monday night, had sat there until early Tuesday morning and then had gone to the furnace room and tortured herself by fire to prove her “spirit faith.” One arm, then another, she laid on the live coals of the furnace, then her right foot, then her left, completing the rite by poking her head through the nar- row furnace door and holding her head over the fire until she was burned to the skull. The path of blood leading from the furnace to the rear door of the base- ment? That, she said, was made after the fire rites. She was going homc, she explained, but the door was locked. Who locked it? “The mysterious hand, was all she would say. | But why? persisted Hargrave, unwill- | ing to accept the mystic explanation of spirit love. of self-torture, why did yon ot it? And the answer, “I do not know. The young woman's will was all that had kept her alive until morning, doc- tors said. If she survived today, plans were completed for amputation of one foot, toes of the other and both hands. Glad to See Chum. Marie Mueller, who was one of Miss | Knaak's closest friends, was sought. She had disappeared. Early today Miss Mueller was found arnd accompanied officers to the hospital. Miss Knaak appeared glad to see her chum, but w%en Miss Mueller pleaded with her to “tell everything,” the young woman on the hospital cot would only say, “I have told everything.” Miss Mueller studied psychology with Miss Knaak under Charles Hitchcock, policeman-teacher and former actor. Officers, convinced, ~despite Miss Knaak's story, that attempted murder | took place in the police station base- | ment, said that all those whose names have come into the investigation have been absolved of any part in the af-| fair.
