ZFIN CONERTBLE BKD SSUES AREACTHE Sbeculative Element Turns ¢ to Foreign Group—Ad- vances Recorded. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. . NEW YORK, October 25.—Interest convertible issues today moved from the domestic to the foreign group, in which the largest advances occurred. The Italian industrial 7s gained from 3% to 4 points in response to the higher prices abroad for the stocks into which they are convertible. Domestic_convertibles were irregular. With the exception of Andes Copper 7s, which had an early rise of nearly 2 points to 165, the other members of this group were reactionary. The oils picked up when oil stocks became the feature of the speculative market. Sugar bonds were also higher. In the case of Eastern Cuba Sugar 7':s the rally from the low price of the month has amounted to 15 points. There was not so_much activity in the United States Government group following the good gains of the last few days. The 434 per cent notes were quoted at par and the 43 per cent issue at a premium of };. High-grade rails and publc utilities were dull and little changed. A few of the "junior rails showed frattional advances. = ° It was announced that the third unit of $10,000,000 Anaconda Copper Co. debentures had been converted into common stock at $59 a share. This leaves $20,000,000 outstanding of the original issue of $50,000,000. The next lot of bonds is convertible at $62 a share and the final $10,000,000 at $65 a share. The price of the bonds today dropped off over 2. points. Public utility bonds and preferred stocks composed the largest portion of today’s issues. This financing has been helped by the recovery that has taken place in the past few-weeks in public utility securities. A number of joint accounts have been forfhed tb ac- cumulate both bonds and preferred stocks at which it appeared to be at- tractive levels compared with the issuing prices. A canvas of underwriting houses in- dicates that the volume of new busiriess under negotiation is small. Dealers are for the first time in some months com- plaining that they have only a limited supply of bonds, and are not able to satisfy the demands of their customers. Railway Income Gains. BALTIMORE, October 25 (Special) — Gross revenues of the Maryland and Pennsylvania for September totaled $82,229.99, a decrease of $12,314.6% as compared with the same month .8 year ago. - Operating expenses for the month showed a reduction of $10,681.77. Net railway operating income aggregated $21,251.35, a gain of $126.23 as com- pared to September, 1927. For the nine months operating reve- nues totaled $635,702.12, a decline of $79,0904.12 as compared to the cor- responding period last year, while net railway operating income was $118,- 936.27, & fallinf off of $19,143.17. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 25.—New high records in the oil and utility groups and sharp upbidding of industrial spe- clalties, coupled with the almost com- plete collapse of pool operations in one or two recently favored issues, made up outstanding developments on the Curb Exchange today. Those who watched with uneasiness the precipitate decline in Checker Cab | Manufacturing placed more significance in what was occurring in the market for that issue than in the ability of other highly speculative shares to move into new high ground. The price left off Wednesday at 64. It broke below 52 today before selling was completed. There were no developments in the affairs of the company itself to account for the wide open break. It was merely an aftermath of the prolonged cam- paign for the rise which had carried the price to a level apparently unwar- ranted for a stock paying no dividends. When selling became urgent a wild scramble to unload ensued and holdings were thrown over regardless of cost. Hygrade Food Products was another that sold off sharply, although the de- cline was not as pronounced in this in- stance. Around the 47 level the price compared with the previous close of 56. National Rubber Machinery, another which had gone off sympatheticaliy when weakness developed in the two first named issues earlier in the week, was again freely supplied at declining prices. On the other hand, those working for the rise in pool favorites had their market ‘well in hand, Anchor Pos" Fence, Anchor Cap, Celotex and Colum- bia Graphophone reached new peaks. the last named opening on a block of 10,700 shates at 57% and subsequently crossing 58.
