12 FIND VITAMIN RETAINER IN GAS-TREATED CELERY Report of Experiments With Ethy- lene Bleaching Indorsed by the American Medical Journal. CHICAGO (#).—Ethylene gas as a substitute for nature in blanching (bleaching) celery is found not to in- jure the Vitamin B content in an ex- periment reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The report is published in course of the Journal's campaign to induce re- | search into the effects on health of the widely used ethylene gas method of final ripening of fruits and vegetables Dr. M. F. Babb of the University of Maine fed celery blanched with emy- lene to young rats and compared them with rats fed on celery not gas treated. He reported that the results indicated the ethylene treatment is not injurious to the vitamin B content of celery. HORSE THROWS WOMAN. | First Night Air Sight-Seeing Service Of Capital Begins With Six Flights ‘Washington’s first night aerial sight- seeing service was in operation at Hoover Pield last night, a half-dozen flights being made by three pilots in two_types of planes. The field was illuminated by the beam from a huge Army searchlight obtained from Bolling Field for the purpose. The light, mounted on a truck for field service, was placed so as to flood the runway _ This light was returned to Boliing Field today, and the next night flying will follow installation of perma- nent lighting equipment- at the Virginia [ut night's flights, made chiefly for experimental purposes, were described as entirely successful.
