L ANTISMITH PASTOR ™* Baptist Minister Says He Is First to Lose Job for Political View,. Byithe Assoelated Press. ATLANTA, Ga., October 24—Barry Wright, chairman of the Anti-Smith Democratic party of Georgia, yesterday made public a letter from the Rev. C. J. Broome saying he had “felt it best to resign the pastorate” of the Baptist Church at Fort Gaines, Ga., because of opposition against him there growing out of his distribution of “anti-Tam- many” circulars. Under date of October 21, the minis- ter wrote: “It may be possible that T can cmm the honor of being the first minister to lose his job on account of o] Al Smith. “Sufficient opposition has de- m here against me on account of out your anti-Tammany circu- Jars that I have felt it best to resign from the puwrnte of the Fort Gaines Baptist Church. Sees Deacons Bitter. “The revelation of Tammany's race sttitude seems to have ‘gotten under some of my deacons’ skins,’ and some bitterness is in evidence. I submitted my resignation today. I have never lny sermon which could be construed as political, and all my po- litical activities have been as an indi- vidual on the outside of the church. (One of my deacons made a very point- ed talk t the Republican purty in humkmnsundayuhoolclus this ming.) "l have no job in view and may have to resort to tentmaking as did Paul of old.” ‘Wright . If the condition discussed by Rev, Mr. Broome ttributed to Tammany tactics in Georgia, as m to be the case, then there can be but one conclusion. Commander Doused With Rest. BY RUSSELL OWEN. Speclal Dispatch to The Star and the New York Times. AZOARD THE WHALER C. A. LAR- SEN, With the Byrd Antarctic Expe- dition, October 24 —Every one on the Byrd expedition is a full-fledged sailor- man now. They went over the line last Sunday and came out on the other side with mud in their eyes and completely soaked. Even Comdr. Byrd took a header into Neptune's baptismal foun- tain and crawled out to get his diploma, looking pleased but bedraggled. It was a great day and lasted well into eve- ning, for the crew of the Larsen made the most of their unusual guests. One prize was collected by the Byrd crew. Dean Smith, pilot, more than 6 feet tall and nicknamed ‘“‘Babe, the Blue Ox,” won the pillow fight and a nice jackknife. Dean's legs are so long he clung to a pole like a leech, his feet acting as pendulums. He has the big- gest boots in the world. When ski boots were ordered for him word was returned by the manufacturers, “Boots now under construction.” Laid end to end, Dean's boots would be usable for bridging crevices. Festivities began early in the after- noon, when Neptune, accompanied by doctor, secretary, guards and _wife, climbed over the port bow in a shower spray and went aft to call upon Capt. Nilsen, on the bridge. The Norwegians exercised all their lngenulty on the cos- tumes, and they were weird. Having taken over the ship for a day, Neptune went forward, where a big tank had been constructed behind the forecastle. There was a platform 3 feet above with a tipping plank, on which the victim sat in state, amazed, and then waiting for something to hit him b-‘ore turning somersaults. Fortunately for the expe- dition members, Mrs. Nilsen was aboard, or ceremonies might have been slightly rougher. Brophy by this time had lost all semblance of a business manager and looked more like a Hottentot in war paint, but before he had realized what had happened he was standing on his head in 6 feet of water. When he came up he was plentifully walloped with mops for good measure. This was the procedure with nearly all, though Balchen, being one of the(r own people, got an extra manhandl In retaliation he pulled one of the guards into the tank with him. It was amazirig how thoroughly messed one was after crawling from the tank. Demas tried washing off the red paint under water. When he came to the surface he looked like an Indian. The combination of lampblack and water was immense. Five members, including Byrd, had crossed the line, and tl avoided a shave. In fact, they went in so quickly that they almost swallowed the tank. None expen‘.ed Byrd to be called, as some doubt as to whether the expedman 's leader nhould be turned upside down with such a lack of cere- mony, but when Neptune's urrem—y called “Richard Byrd” he proved game -mwentdownmnkemphuonm A few questions were asked him to em.bluh hu former crossing, md then Igloo, Byrd's dog, ran down_ to -him and climbed up into his lap. Byrd was patting his head when mddenly his heels went up in the air, l.ndthelnt seen of him were his distinguished feet waving in the breeze as he hit the water with a splash. Igloo went with him, and the first thing Byrd did was to toss the dog out on to the platform. ‘The dog is devoted to his master. When Byrd turned to climb out the other -side of the ladder Igloo thought he was lost and ran up down whining until the commander appeared, drip- ping wet, to receive his diploma. Vanderveer, moving picture nhotog- rapher, had been taking pictures of these happenings. For once the cam- eraman was given a place in the main event. Camera and all, he was seized and thrown into the tank. The duckings were followed by potato and sack races, tug-of-war and other games, but Babe Smith was the only victor for the Americans. The City of New York and the Bolling also will be directed there to take on cargo and then proceed to Dunedin, where final arrangements for stores will be made and the other supplies loaded. Despite the slow time made by the City of New York, due to lack of wind, the expedition was not delayed, because it was not planned to leave Dunedin for the ice until the first week of De- cember at the earliest.
