Tempering justice with mercy, Judge! Robert E. Mattingly yesterday took the | personal bond of two men who pleaded | guilt to traffic violations but said they wera unable to pay their fines. Jack C. Dermody, 4400 block of Ninth strsat, told the court he had been un- able to obtain work for several months, and it was his eagerness to interview a ' “prospect” that caused him to driveli across Connecticut Avenue Bridge at an unlawful rate of speed. Policeman A. E. Brown of the Traffic Bureau arrested him, and he failed to get the job. Judge Mattingly decided to give Dermody two months to pay a $10 fine, then, glancing at the calendar, told the defendant that if he would bring in the $10 on Decem- ber 23 the court would return it to him as a Christmas present. [ Fernley G. Faucett, 20-year-old | George Washington University student, | pleaced that he was working his way through college and in dire need of the $15 he posted as collateral follow- ing his arrest for speeding and failing to show a registration card. Park po- liceman S. G. Kitchen arrested him after he had passed another machine in Potomac Park. Judge Mattingly de- cided that Faucett, too, could give his personal bond.
