RAPID WORK SHOWN| INFLOOD CONTROL $24,000,000 Fund Allotted o | Mississippi Basin Probably Expended by June. By the Ascociated Press. The War Department announced to- day that work is progressing so rapidly on Mississip] indications now are that the entire ap- propriation of $24,000,000 available will have been expen to June 30, 1929. Operations now going on under the § new flood control plan are in four classes. They include enlargsment and strengthening of main river levees, bank yevetment, dredging and - preliminary work on the Bonnet Carre spillway for the protection of New Orleans. Sixty-five contracts have been let for Jevee work, involving the movement of 15,194,500 cubic yards of material. In| addition, work involving placement of | 6.769,000 cubic yards is being done by | hired labor. The engineers in charge | of the project propose to undertake still more levee work this year which will bring the total expenditures from the | current appropriation to abeut $10,-| 000,000. | ‘Work Vigorously Pushed. The report said that bank revetment | work was being pushed vigorously at the places where it is most urgently | needed and is ngeessarily scattered throughout the entire lower river. It was cstimated that the cost of the re- | vetment work this year would amount to $12,000,000. The satisfactory prog- | ress being made in bank revetment will | enable the construction. within a year or two. of works to reduce the amount | of maintenance dredging now required | in the bars during the low water sea- son to insure a nine-foot channel for navigation, the report said. | The report further stated that plans were being prepared for the Bonnet Carre spillway, but that actual con-| struction must be deferred until ques- | tions regarding levee rights of way and | flowage rights are settled. The report added that preparations were under way for making the topographic map of the alluvial valley recommended n the Army engineer plan. Draws Upon Emergency Fund. Secretary of War Davis has allotted $400,000 from the emergency fund of $1,000,000 appropriated by Congress for rescue work and for the maintenance and repair of flood jcontrol work on tributaries of the ississippi affected by the 1927 flood. These allotments have enabled the Army engineers to assist loal people in making flood fights on the Whiter St. Francis and other streams in the Mississippi basin and are being used in-repairing crevices in levees. The report said that prior to the pas- sage of the flood control act the annual expenditures for Mississippi River fiood control amounted to about $10,000,000, but that this year operations were on a scale two and a half times as great. “The success of the Mississippi River Commission engineer districts in meet- ing this sudden overload attest the of- ficiency of their personnel and the soundness. of the organization pre- seribed by the new flood control act,” the report said.
