ENGLAND SENDING * WOMAN DEBATERS ¥ Team Will Meet 6. W u. Rep-I ' resentatives October 31. Series Began in 1923, For the first time since international ” intercollegiate debates were begun five * years ago, a team composed solely of women representing the universities of / Great Britain is to visit the United , States this year, and on October 31 will engage the women's team of George '« Washington University in debate. The debates were inaugurated in 1923 * when a team from Oxford met a George ‘Washington team. Since then the visit of the Englishmen has been the out- standing event on _the calendar of the local university. Prevlously the teams * have been composed of me! George Washington hu deblted Ox- ford and Cambridge in alternate years #.and in the Spring of 1927 a team from George Washington was chosen to rep- ‘' resent the colleges and universities of {hed United States in a tour of Eng- and. Three on Visiting Team. ‘The team that will visit Washing- ton this month is composed of three young women, one each from Oxiord, Cambridge and London Universities. They will arrive here on the evening of October 30 and will be continuously entertained until their departure on the morning of November 1. The English women are Miss Nancy Samuel of Somerville College, Oxford University; Miss Margery Sharp of Bed- ford College, London University, and Miss Leoncra W. Lockhart of Girton College, Cambridge. Members of the George Washington team have rot vet been announced. Miss Samuel is the daughter of Rt Hon. Sir - Herbert Samuel, G. C. member of Parliament from 1902 to 1918 and for several years in the British cabinet. In 1920 Sir Herbert became ' high commissioner for Palestine and Miss Samuel accompanied him there. After extensive travel in the Near East she returned to England in 1922 and attended school in Sussex. A second visit to Palestine followed and then she matriculated at Oxford. - During this year, which is her last at the. univer- sity, she has spoken at women's liberal clubs, besides taking part in numerous school activities. Miss Lockhart’s Career. Miss Lockhart is the daughter of | Capt. Murray Lockhart, R. N., the head ' of a prominent Scottish Lowland family {i| and a great-nephew of the son-in-law .+ and bingrapher of Sir Walter Scott. i She has spent several years on the ! South African veldt.
