SOCIETY., iGolf Season on North Shore at Height as Tennis Wanes Members of Washington Colony Planning Return to Home City—Early Transfer of German Embassy BEVERLY, Mass., September 22— Autumn days have come on the North Shore, but as yet the trees have only commenced to turn in foliage and the gardens are still beauty spots and a joy to those who find the September stay one of the most enjoyable of the season, ‘While tennis wanes, golf takes on new zest, and with some of the finest courses in the country located on the North Shore more than the usual number are playing. The yachting season is over and the clubs are closing, but many craft are still tugging at their anchors in the harbors, and many vachtsmen enjoy a sail or an im- promptu race on bright September days. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leiter have re- turned to Washington after spending the Summer at Edgewater House, their lovely North Shore home in the ‘West Beach district at Beverley Farms. Mrs. Leiter during her stay did much entertaining, especially for members of the diplomatic set and Washington friends. Thomas Leiter has returned to his studies at the St. Paul's School, in Concord, N. H.. while the daughter, Miss Nancy Leiter. again is with her books in her Washington school. United States Minister to Canada and Mrs. Phillips End Vacation. The United States Minister to Can- ada. Mr. William Phillips, will return with his family to Ottawa next week after a month at Highover, their estate at North Beverly. Mrs. Phillips and the young_folk have been at Highover for most of the Summer, while the min- ister has been enjoying his only real vacation with a few weeks' stay at the North Beverly home, on the shores of picturesque Wenham Lake. Mrs. Jacob Leander Loose has closed Sea Rocks. her Summer home at Pride’s Crossing. on Eastern Point, in Glouces- ter. where many Washingtonians have been entertained during the Summer. Mrs. Loose is in Kansas City for a short stay, but will spend the Winter in Washington. Mrs. C. D. Shepard of Winnipeg is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Keith Merrill at Avalon, their Summer home at Pride’s Crossing. The Sherman Flints, who have spent the Summer at Hamilton, will return next week to Washington after a long stay in the Myopia district. Maj. George S. Patton, U. S. A, has been here from Washington for a with his family in their Hamilton coun- try home. The Pattons have one of the finest stables in the Myopia district and the horses have been shown to blue ribbons in many North Shore shows this season. Gen. and Mrs. Clarence C. Williams are planning to spend the Autumn at Sagamore Farms, their Hamilton coun- try home in the Myopia district. Mrs. Williams, who is the daughter of the late Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, has been much interested in the politic: primaries, which were held Tuesday, as was her daughter, Mrs. William Gordon Means of Pride’s Crossing, one of the leaders in the women's organizations of Essex County which her father, Maj. Augustus Peabody Gardner, represented in Congress for so many years. * ALEXANDRIA SOCIETY Mrs. Douglas Lindsey spent the week end as the guest of Miss Elizabeth Barr in Winchester and was accompanied home by Miss Barr, who has resumed her place on the faculty of St. Agnes’ School.
