NORTH ASIA LINKED TONORTH ANERICA Scientists Claim Clues Found Ectablishing Similarity in Ancient Customs. Wy the Associated Press. 1 _NEW YORK, September 19.—Present- ry evidences that once a connecting link may have existed between North America and north Asia were present- -1 yesterday to the International Con- gress of Americanists here. These clues are occasional odd simi- .arities in customs, implements or dress “xisting in & broad bend across North America and reaching far into Siberia: Scientists from ZRussia, America and Denmark contributed to this material. Dr. Ales Hrdlicka of the Nationl Museum at Washington said that new material finds “showed that in recent times there must have been a closed connection between the tribes | Co. of northern Asia and the new world.” Russian Scientist's View. Prof. W. G. Bogoras of the museum of the Academy of Sciences, Leningrad, Russia, told of the similarity of an- cient legends of animal worship. Si- beria, he said, has the my#h of the bear; north Pacific Asia and America the whale and the otter; southeast Asia the dragon, and Central Asia the horse. He found characteristic re- semblances in & myth of the theft of fire as told in north Asia and North American groups. Both the North American Indian and the North Asian must undergo tortures in seeking the spirits during initiation in shamanistic or conjuring rites, said Bogoras. While the North American In- dian makes his torture literal, the North Asian does it altogether in imagi- nation, having the spirits torture him sometimes in monstrous ways, but not undergoing bodily harm thereby. Similar Customs Traced. Bogoras traced a similarity in customs and implements of root diggers in Si- beria and in the “Mackenzie area of North America.” He told of Siberian tribes afraid of horses and said that until 300 or 400 years ago American Indians had no horses, suggesting that for a long period the ancestors of these groups did not know what horses were, with the result that in some Siberian tribes the horse still inspires instinctive fear. Theikel Mathiassen of the National Museum of - said there is evidence of a very close connection be- twaon the material culture of American Eskimos and those of extreme Eastern A of Leningrad described visored hunting hats brightly painted with geometrical figures and used among Aleutian Island peoples. He said y ppear to be related to hat found among Bering Strait Eskimos. $13,209,793 POSTAL CONTRACT AWARDED 12,800,000,000 Stamped Envelopes and Newspaper Wrappers - Are Ordered.
