Pty UNOFFGIAL JINT P OY SCOUT TRI terior of Dark C Pottsville’s Legal Tender Bater Goon det Plunges Treasury Into Financial Riddle. By the Associated Press. 15-year-old Boy Scou By the Associated Press. POTTSVILLE, Pa., September 19.— After causing a warrant to be issued for the arrest of Stephen Allsop, treas- urer of the borough of Gilbertson, on charges of malfeasance in office, taxpay- ers of that place today awaited de- velopments in a financial riddle. Attorney George H. Kaercher, repre- senting members of the taxpayers’ as- soclation, said the borough had been is- suing a form of currency that at the present time, at least, is worthless. ‘What the attorney described as an “unofficial mint” came into being some |time ago, when the borough lacked funds in its treasury to pay current bills. ‘Accordingly, he said, orders for money were drawn on the empty treasury and these soon became legal tender in the borough. Storekeepers cashed them and . eventually some of them were sent back to the treasury in payment of taxes, only to be reissued, and, the attorney declared, without official record of their zeceipt on the town's books. How long this form of paper cur- |rency has been used and the total amount represented in the orders is not |known. In obtaining the warrant for |Allsop’s arrest, however, five orders were submitted as evidence. It was alleged the orders had been used to pay taxes last year, put back into cir- culation and used again in paying taxes this year. Gilbertson has a population of 3,500. CITY NEWS IN BRIEF. TODAY.
