ANCIENT PEROVIANS - DEVELOPED GROPS Race Reached High Stage of Primitive Farming, Dr. 0. F. Cook Says. | , The ancient Peruvians, boxed up in | narrow Andean valleys, which forced | them to depend on their own resources | food. developed a high stage of primitive agriculture, Dr. O. F. Cook of the Department of Agriculture told the Anthropological Society of Wash- | ington this week. | The plains people of the New World. such as the Indians of North America, could forage for food over a wide area, Dr. Cook said. and hence had little | incentive to settle down and develop crop plants and domestic animals. The Peruvians, however, had from 60 to 0 species of plants under cultivation and had domesticated such indigenous ani- mals as the alpaca before the coming | of the Incas. who occupied the coun- iy at the time of the Spanish con- quest. The land suitable for cultivation was | largely confined to deep, narrow val- | leys, the bottoms of which were rocky siream beds. The ancient, vanquished people actually altered the courses of the streams and improved the land by terraces, constructed with immense | labor. They made a specialty of root | crops. Twenty or thirty varieties of | Ppotatoes were grown. ! A root crop was obtained from a species of oxalis and still another from | & plant related to the Madeira vine.| Most of these have long since entirely disappeared from cultivation and their edible qualities are unknown. The\, also cultivated cocoa and sweet pota- | toes. Further toward the summit of fl'h. Andes the tillable regions become fewer | and fewer and the crops less diversi- | fied. The last crop in cultivation was | a type of pigweed. which grew about a foot high. and the seeds of which were carried as food by the ancient shepherds, who went further up the | mountains lo und their flocks of al- cas annd llam wWhemer an rlzinll art of agricul- ture developed in America was ques- tioned by Dr. Alex Hrdlicka in discuss- | Assumes Noted 'llllc l Young Viscount grandson and heir of the late Earl of Asquith and Oxford, who died recently | at his home in England.
