Aims for Keener Interest : College and School Basketers to Get Busy AWARDS REETNG TONEW ORLEANS Shift From New York, First in Years, Expected to Prove Helpful. BY H. C. BYRD. T meeting in New Orleans next vear, the first time in years that the annual gathering has ce outside New York, ational Collegiate Ath: ation hopes to incre e its membership and awaken a keener in- | terest in its work among Southern schools an opportunity to attend at many of the schools in the South are | not represented, and it is to give these | schools an oportunity to attend at less expense and thus hecome bette acquainted with the work the associa- tion is doing that New Ovlean: chosen by a close vote over St. Louis Tt was believed that holding of the annual meeting in Chicago several years ago would help the association in the Middle West. It qid, and it is expected that the same good re will accrue from the meeting in the Louisiana city. | For some years efforts have been | made to shift the meetings of the as-| sociation to other cities, but without | felt by N v that if The. Heretofore the matter has heen left | in the hands of the exccutive commit- tee. but this time the vote was taken on the floor. with the yesult that the meeting_will not take place in New | York. The gathering of the Coaches’ Association also is scheduléd for New Orleans, and that city probably will | have the greatest influx of athletic | directors, faculty men connected with | athletics and coaches that it ever has | known. | - Incidentally, it seems that there is likely to be fome other changes in | policy in the National Collegiate Ath- Jetic Association. It is felt in many qGuarters that the steam roller methods of putting things across arve, to <ay the least, mot educationai, and a | strong group in theorganization seems | determined that it ought to end. 1 1 General opinion of all coaches at | the coaches’ meeting In New York was that foot hall is betfer played to- day than at any previous time in the history of the game. One prominent coach, Bob Zuppke, made the state- ment that most of the alumni who are trying to tell coaches how to run | teams never even played on a winning eleven, and that the teams of today, | the teams coached by men they criti- cise. could beat the life out of any eleven with which_the critics ever had | been connected. One alumnus of a big university | who has criticized the coaching of | that school unmercifully was men- | tipned especially, and it was stated | that the team on which this partic- | ular man played not only never won @ game, but that the man himself | never got above the mediocre stage of performance. i In this connection it is interesting o note the reply that Zuppke mude to an inquiry by the president of the Alumni Association of Ohio State Uni- versity as to the capability of Jack | Wilce, Ohio State coach, when the | latter—was under fire from certain | alumni last Fall. Zuppke wrote in | his reply that “Jack Wiice is a bigger | man in the foot ball world than all | the alumni of Ohio State University | oombined.” Zuppke told an amusing story of a haifbagk he had who was not overly apt but hewed to the line of every instruction. It seems that before one game, Zuppke made his team a speech | in which he said that if the game were not to be won he did not want any man to come off that field alive. Late in the contest, with the score Sust & small margin in favor of the | other team he ment in this halfback & a substitute for a player named. | ¢ Brown. The regular back wis | | streiched on the ground and the i haifback went on the fleld, pu ~ir down 10 the chest of the regul and then rushed back to the sidelin and sat on the bench. Zuppke, amazcd, walked over and impatientiy the sub what was the matter, reply he got was, “I couldn’t go in, e it MRrs. Miriam i R of Fiocsen ez et URNS HORN - 1he dark.
