HARRIS &EWI MRS. EUGENE MEYER, JR,, Box holder and member of committee for Charity Ball st Willerd, January 9. Washington Opens Year With Conspicuous Events Featuring Social Program Series of Receptions at White House Starts Tomorfow. to BC Fo"owed by N“meraus Important Official Functions. | BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. IKE all the great capitals of the world Washington starts in on its| New Year today with its most brilliant and scintillating features ut forth—a series of receptions starting with that at the White ouse, progressing through official channels and reaching into pri- vate homes where the open door offers cheer and welcome to old friends. This season the program is a bit distorted, official hospitality waiting on that of private homes, and tomorrow the White House doors open for the annual welcome of the President and the First Lady of the Land to diplomats and officials; the Secretary of State and his lady reccive the Am- bassadors and Ministers and lesser diplomats of foreign countrics, and other cabinet officers open ther homes to a more domestic company and few but official houses are opencd. HERE is always leit a pleasant memory with society of deeds well | dane in the old year as near its close so many events are given :_mH generously contributed to for the support of charity, and again for the New Year a great charity ball looms which through long years has been the particular pride of Washington residents in and out of society. The charity ball of 1928 will surpass its predecessors just as all other events in the Capital gain greater perfection each season. EXT in importance is the Washington Assembly January 11, with its | glances into the past, promising to become a constellation in the | ishifting social firmament of the Capital. It is a ball around which the historic atmosphere clings, bringing back into its proper setting the stately minuet, the volummous skirts and elaborate costumes and head- dresses of past periods, while the descendants of the beaux and belles of early Washington stalk the social boards just as did their ancestors. OT to lag behind 1927 in the good spirit of giving, there is the society horse show with its dozens of attractions on the tanbark, bringing into his own king horse, who has been crowded off all other highways hut the ring and the wooded pathways, with the progress of invention. The Soldiers, Sailors and Marmes' Club, a resting place for men of the serv- ice, will benefit by the generous support of the show, and from the smallest 10 the largest riders unusual accomplishment will be seen. ANUARY 30 Lrings Washington's most beautiful and spectacular ball of the year, the Bal Boheme of the Washington Arts Club, which this Year in elaborateness and unique conception will surpass its predecessors. The Capital boasts some of the best artistic talent of the country and its | place is the Arts Club, with its historic walls always filled with | ng exhibitions. This year the ball will take on medieval atmos- | phere. hut the ger scheme of the affair will not be known until g | enter the greal ballroom at the Willard Hotel Artists are coming many cities 10 attend and it will be the largest i number of guests of any ball yet given by the ciub. is al Club, which will tomorrow keep open house for its voted two perios of last week to the joyous younger set | in t mal cirele. One evening was devoted to the junior ele- ment a ars of age, when there was the best of music for up- to-date dances, and all sorts of Christmas cheer.
