The essential matter is to pick up the stitches about the hole. In loose weaves, such as those in stockings | and mich of the lingerle, the catching | of the loop where the run starts is not ha N Invisible Darning. The method of mending which I shall describe is that which may be used on one's very best silk stockings and which will leave hardly a trace, especially if one splits the sewing silk floss of a twisted three-strand silk. ke a fine crochet needle. Once you have caught the thread loop, chain- stitch down the length of the run, catching up every cross thread in the run. Fasten off with a fine stitch, just enough to make sure that the loop is held firmly. Where the goods are woolen, as in a dress or sweater, and there is an actusd rent, match the color precisely in very fine wool thread, also in cot- to, 1f possible. With the cotton run the edge of the hole and draw as tight possible without puckering the ods. Fasten off the thread and then rn the hole, considerably reduced in size by the draw thread. Sometimes, where the hole has been made by a | jagged tear and the goods are gone, it is possible to cut away some of the | knitted material from the hem or else- where and then shape this piece to fit v neatly trimmed hole. Baste the material | in which the hole occurs on to a small | picce of heavy brown paper and then baste the piece to be let in so that |it fits perfectly. Run the edges to- gether with a weaving stitch as in | darning. Of course, it is necessary to make certain that the hem or other part from which the mending plece has been taken is made proof against raveling. This is done by making a double machine stitching around the area before the piece is cut out and then binding for extra security. Rosebud Beets. These are the very tender young beets which are only to be had at certain seasons, such as Summer | or early Fall. Boil the beets quickly, dip them in cold water, then slip the skins from them. Dress with | melted butter, salt and pepper. Do not cut the beets unless they are of iarge size; then just halve or quarter them. be fol- The Daily Cross-Word Puzzle (Copyright, R H ddN Loy gnificent. . Entwined. . Knowledge. . Bathing the New Baby. When the new baby arrives, he needs a rubbing with warm olive oil or some bland, warmed oil, fn order to free him from his tenacious covering. After that he should have a daily warm sponge bath, though the tub- bing should be put off until the navel is perfectly healed. The navel dress- ing should not be wet, and if he is dipped into the tub it takes an expert to prevent this happening. Nurses can manage this, and often do tub the baby almost from the third day on, but this task is not for the mother. The second day prepare a tub of warm water. Put the baby on a table, padded with a blanket and keep him covered as he s being bathed. Wash his face with clear water and wipe dry. Wash the head with a good brand of white soap, and don't be afraid to rub it; rinse with clear water and wipe dry. Now take two wisps of cotton and, dipping them in plain salt water (one teaspoon to a.pint), or in boric acid water (same proportions), clean each eye. If there is any dis- charge in the eyes, be sure and tell the doctor and lef him advise the medicine that is to be used in them. Don’t try to doctor them yourself. Put some olive oil on another wisp of cotton and oil the nose. This will remove the crusts without trouble, and babies do hate haying their noses dug into with toothpicks. Wipe outside of ears, but put noth- ing in them, and do not touch the mouth unless there is thrush, which needs treatment. More harm is done by washing the baby's mouth than by leaving it alone. Now wash each arm and leg sep- arately and wipe dry, keeping the baby covered meanwhile. Later, when he can be put in the tub, he can, atter the preliminaries, be soaped ail over and dipped in the tub, but just at first stick to this slower process. If the baby’s clothes are ready be- forehand and every toilet article with- in reach and the baby kept warm, he will like his daily bath period. And keeping him on a table will give him a much greater feeling of security than if he is perilously balanced on his mother’s lap. Green Corn and Peppers. For this dish allow one green ,pep- per to four ears of corn, cut the pepper into small pieces and cook for a few minutes in butter, then add the corn cut from the ears and cook for 10 minutes, stirring often. Pour in one-half a cupful ofy rich milk, season to taste and thicken with two teaspoonfuls of flour blend- ed with lhe same quantity of butter. Twine Holder. Give two coats of blue lacquer to one of those heavy round board ice cream cartons, the hdlf pint size, size exactly. Punch a hole in the center of the top for a cord to hang it by, and a hole in the bottom of the bhox for a pretty Chinese tassel in orange color. Also the end of the twine string may be pulled through this hole. Black-eyed Susans in their lovely rich colorings may dec- orate the box. This makes an at- tractive little swinging box of twine to' have in any room. Answer to Yesterday’s Puzzle. Shiny Skin and Blackheads. Dear Miss Leeds: I have become disheartened over my complexion. My nose is very red and shiny and under this shiny layer of skin are blackheads. I am a girl 17 years old, § feet 41 inches tall and 1 weigh 124 problem, since they cause indigestion I have been cutting down my diet and I have lost 10 pounds by so do- ing. Is this harmful? ~MARY W: Answer—The decaying teeth are probably at the root of your beauty problem since they cause indigestion which, in turn, causes the red nose and poor condition of your complexjon You also need to apply the correct ex: ternal treatments to soften and refine the skin. Iirst of all have the teeth ittended to, however. The weight you have given is ideal for your age height; do not lose any more pound Be careful to eat some fresh fruit, raw vegetables . and cooked vegetables every day. Drink about five glasstuls of water daily between meals. Exer- cise out-of-doors every day. At bed- time remove your make-up with cold cream and then give your face a good washing with pure castile soap and varm water, using a complexion sh to work up a thick lather inse In warm water, press out the ripe blackheads and rinse again in cold water. Use this salve three times a week ext morning wash your face in cold water, dry and pat on a soothing lo- tion before you apply powder. Equal parts of glycerin, rosewater and witch-hazel makes a suitable lotion, LOIS LEED: Dear Miss Leeds: I am troubled with large, unsightly ears. Is there any way to correct this trouble? D. G. B. Answer—Ears cannot very well be made any smaller, but if they stand out too far from your head they may be made to lie flatter. A plastic sur- geon may be able to help you by per- forming a simple operation behind the ears so that they may be brought closer to your head, Parents should notice and correct outstanding ears in childhood when they may be trained easily. LOIS LEEDS. Astringent Lotion for Face. Dear Lofs Leeds :(1) Please print the recipe for an astringent that does not contain witch-hazel, since this in- gredient seems to make my skin scaly. Please prescribe a tonic for daily use that will not harm a permanent wave. ADA. Answer—(1) $ix ounces elderflower water and one dram tincture of ben- zoin make a simple astringent. (2) Yes. (3) Women who have had per- manent waves must give their hair special care to avoid the troubles you complain of. Massage your scalp vig- for at least 10 minutes a day and brush your hair well.
