BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. #pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 8.—Great- er breadth was exhibited in the bond market today, and many new high prices for the movement, and some for the vear, were recorded. There was a decided preference for issues with high coupons which tended to di- vert interest from the hetter grades {nto the speculative domestic list and into foreign government and cotpora- tions’ bonds that are still under their call prices. g Trading was more active. The mar- ket is shaping up for more new is. sues. The ability of the syndicate which purchased the $60,000, of New York 4 per cent honds last Spring to close the account was an llustration of the changed conditions in the investment world since the end of July. Back at High Prices. A number of the railroad and in- dustrial bonds which ted quite sharply late in August after rallying from the Midsummer low area, were back again toda previous high rices. Demand coming into :might from large dual buye) who have been away for the past two months, and also from institutions. It is expected that a $30.000,000 issue of 5 per cent bonds will be offered ghortly by the Cities Service group, " and a $10,000,000 block of Firestone Rubber Co. 5 per cent notes is ex- pected. g Today the Great Northern Railway made application to the Interstate Commerce Commission to sell $20,- 000,000 of its 4% per cent general mortgage bonds. The market for ex- isting bonds of this mortgage is about 9915, In the application it is stated that the proceeds are to reimburse the company for money spent for im- provements and betterments between 1911 and 1921. Among the new high prices in in- dustrial bonds were those for Ana- conda Copper Co. 6s, Bethlehem Stelfse, Marine 6s and Kelly Spring- field 8s. The Anaconda 6s are now at their redemption price of 105, which continues to February 1933. Ameri- can Sugar 6s are also about 105, which ‘was the redemption figure to Januai 1927. Since that date the call price has'dropped to 1041 e—aeulatIVe Rnlls Strong. ive railroad bonds were ng and active. This in- cluded Missouri Pacific 4s, all the New Haven issues, Frisco income 6s, Sea- board adjustments and Consolidated 6s, Western Maryland 4s at a new high and the 5'gs. The feature of the foreign depart- ment was the renewed strength in Ger- man 7s, which were once more above 107. Thé™ idds German city bonds have been firmer recently, Rome 613s t the best price in some months French descriptions were some- what irregular. Belgian 7s and 7T%s were higher. The South American list e@Bibited a firm trend. There will probably be more financing in this guarter soon. The long-delayed Colom- bian loan is slated to appear within a téw weeks. ~I/nited States Government bonds shiowed very little change. The of- which were urgent around ented for the most part ake down profits accu- mulated on this recent rise and re. flected no material change in specula- | tive sentiment. The view was ex- pressed in several quarters, however, that rgardless of whether or not con- ditions within the market and in out- side business warranted current prices the market had gone ahead too fast and was nearing the danger zone, Nevertheless offerings were not suf- ficient to offset all the improvement. Curtiss Aero advanced to a new top at 45. Roval Baking Powder main- tained most of the 18 points rise of vesterday. Postum was seeking to a company to round out its expansion group the public ut manded most attention. Philadelphia Electric was well taken . Rumors have been current that United Gas and Tmprovement was seeking to acquire control, although nothing offi- cial has o far been forthcoming. At the same time shates of the latter company worked fractionally higher. Electric Investors and Lehigh Power featured the lower priced members, reaching new tops for the year. Buf- falo, Niagara and Eastern Power was another to establish a new high. Celotex held its place as one of the active specialties although the advance was limited. Those who have been back of the buying were referring to the issue as a “second Johns-Manville.” ~ Celotex earnings estimates have been continually re- vised upward and there appeared to be concrete basis for the recent upturn. General Baking class “A™ went to a new top, its strength being coinci- dent with high prices for food shares on the Stock Exchange. Melville common was another specialty fav. orite easy to move because of the lim- ited floating supply. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 8.—Reports of stormy weather in parts of Canada rallied_the wheat markat today from an early decline. Speculative offerings were' light and houses with forefgn connections were buyers. Opening un- changed to t;c lower, wheat soon scored an all-around advance. Corn and oats developed strength also, corn starting unchanged to 7c off and sub- sequently showing a decided general upturn. Provisions were easier. WHEAT— High. Hays, president of the Motion Picture Pro- ducers and Distributors of America. Advices today that rains have been | interfering with harvest operations in all three Canadian prairie provinces were emphasized by prospects of further showers and of cooler weather. It was indicated that satisfactory field conditions and absence of frost are requisite to give late crops in Canada a chance to ripen. Some €anadian temperatures of 38 were re- ported today. Corn derived strength at times today from bullish reports regarding the corn_crop outlook in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Word from a leading ex- pert said that corn throughout the central part of the first two States named would need four to six weeks to mature, and that frost before aver- age dates would he very damaging. According to a leading authority, only about 40 per cent of the Tllinois corn crop will be damaged.
