This is the forécast of Admiral | Bullard, vice chairman of the Federal Radio Commission. who is the first| member of that body to return from his sectional inspection tour. | As a matter of fact, the return of Admiral Bullard and Commissioner Bellows, who is due here this week, may bring about many immediate frequency shifts among radio stations that will become _effec at once. Commissioner Caldwell, who has the Middle Atlantic and New England area, and Commissioner Sykes, who is in the South, are not expecied back for some time. Holds Changes Necessary. | The shifts that will take place are | to be the results of personal observa- tions of broadcasting and reception conditions, particularly in the Middle West. Admiral Bullard's itinerary in- | cluded Cleveland, Cincinnati, Colum- bus, Akron, Detroit and Pi where he visited the leading s He intimated that he is convinced some frequency ign, ments v, and said th would be made known shortly. The admiral found conditions on the whole to be good. There is some in terference, however, one outstanding h of frequencies being between Detroit, and WJZ, New York - like a number of other situations, will be cleared up by tran. posing certain stations in the broad- {ast band, according to Admiral Bul Bellows Farther West. | Commissioner Bellows has been far- ther West, and he also has recom- mended some changes. These, how- ever, will not be announced until the commission has deliberated upon the recommendation These changes, it is made plain, are 1pary to the, numerous shifl made necessary when Wint: conditlo % set in. Then an entirel new lin¢-up may be required becau of the present crowding of wave lengths Engineers have pointed out that wilreas at present the ranges of StITIOLY on the same waves are not wide enough to cause conflict, the Clearer atmosphere of Winter will widen these ranges and inevitably will result in clashes, Under its plan of licensing stations 60 days the commission has power to make an entirely new allocs tion if it chooses. Its plan, however, is to adhere to the present line-up as a basis. As Admiral Bullard points out, it can only await Winter broadeasting to find out exactly how the present scheme will work out. Until then, it is begging trouble to make adjust- ments where there are none necessary now. CHICAGO, September 8.—Tex Rick- ard announced today that “the most extensive world-wide broadcast ever ittempted” has been arranged for the Tunney-Dempsey fight here Septem- ber 22, The National Broadcasting Co. has been, granted the exclusive right to broadcast the fight to the outside world, Rickard sald, under the spon- sorship of the Scripps-Howard news- papers. Cohtracts were signed some time ago, the promoter added, but an- nouncement was withheld pending the working out of details here. “ Under the agreement with the Iili- | nois Boxing Commission, by which the fight was brought to Chicago, permis- | sion to broadcast the event was granted | to some Chicago stations, but the National Broadcasting Co. i to control the chain broadeast. “Interest in the fight is keen in | Europe, Central and South America and Australia,” Rickard said. “The new short wave system will be used to send Graham Namee's ringside description to foreign countries. Of course, the great difference in time will be an important factor, as it will probably be between 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning in Kurope, and when we cross the international date line in the Pacific, McNamee will be talking into the next day.” Rickard said that M. H. Aylesworth, president of the National Broadcast- ing Co., ha_dreported the following stations as having arranged for the fight, with the list still incomplete: WEAF and WJZ, New York; WEEI and WBZ, Boston; WBZA, Springtield, : WTIC, Hartford, Conn.; WJAR, lence, R. Seventeen broadcasting _stations were deleted from the official lists by the Federal Radlo Commission today, following the failure of the owners to renew their licenses, which expired August 16. Due warning was issued each station about two weeks ago that September 6 would be the last day upon which applications for re- newals would be received. Most of the stations are rated at 100 watts or less, only one was a 500-watter, WREO, at Lansing, while three were 250-watt stations; they were WDBEK, Cleveland; WEAIL Ithaca, N. Y., and WTHO, at Detroit. The elimination of these trans- mitters leaves a total of 676 active broadcast_stations under the direc- tions of the Federal Radio Commis- on, 671 of them in the United States proper, 3 in Alaska and 1 each in Porto Rico and Hawaii. This is fewer stations on the air than there has been for some months, and tends to clear up certain channels a little. The total at one time was 732, which maximum it is hoped by many will never again be reached. A few of the station owners ad- vised the commission that the failure to return_renewal applications was intentional, thus indicating their de- sire to drop out of radio broadcast- | ing temporarily, at least. Station WREO was one of these, but the were not announced by the cimmission in its official statement. It is suspected that the failure of Cornell University to renew its license is due to the fact that those in charge of the station are absent this Summer, and that a belated ap- plication may yet be filed. It is feared, however, that a public hearing may be required before this or any other renewal is authorized. The disposition of the commission- ers seems to be to reduce the stations KDKA, Pittsburgh; KYW, Chicago; KGO and KPO, San Francisco; KFI, Los Angeles: KGW, Portland; KOA, Denver; KOMO and KFOA, Seattle; WHAS, Louisville: KHQ, Spokane, .:land stations at Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and Bristow, Okla AIR Yy A% ,gt’om Ejrst_of the Fall and Winter Weekly Concerts “» Whittall Anglo-Persisas COMPLETE OPENING PROGRAM IN LOCAL NEWSPAPERS AND WINDOWS .
